Denny Eckrich Scores $6,000 Payday At Bud Open Shootout Dubuque Speedway 5/25/03

Dubuque, Iowa: A great crowd was on hand Sunday, May 25th as the Dubuque Speedway presented the “Bud Open Late Model Shootout” sponsored  by Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation, Hollywood Graphics and Hoosier Racing Tire.

26 Bud Late Models took to the high banked 3/8 mile track for the 50 lap feature with Hollywood Graphics dash winner Billy Tuckwell setting the pace. Tuckwell was joined on the front row by his teammate for the night Ray Guss Jr. Guss parked his familiar #12 to race the #75 backup car of Tuckwell’s. The two 75’s were not able to hold off the “Flyin 50” of Denny Eckrich as Eckrich was able to get out early and set the pace. Eckrich held the point position for the first 19 laps while several cars were making there way to the front from deep in the filed. Dennis Erb took the lead on lap 20 after starting the main in the 17th position. Erb went on to lead the race for the next 22 laps until Eckrich was able to regain the top spot. While the fierce battle was going on for the lead, 3 and four wide racing was going on as several positions were being swapped. A great battle was being held for the 3rd position as Dave Eckrich, Steve Boley and Darrel DeFrance battled wheel to wheel.

A late race caution on lap 45 set up a five lap dash to the finish. Eckrich held his line perfectly and took the win over Erb. Dave Eckrich brought home the 58 in third taking the checkers ahead of DeFrance who took the initial green in 22nd. Steve Boley rounded out the top five.

In addition to the Bud Late Models, all support classes were action running under a draw and redraw format. The 20 lap Modified feature was paced early by Mark Schulte before he gave way to Rich Smith. Smith took the lead on lap 4 and went to lead the remainder of the 20 lap feature holding off Ron Barker for the win. Steve Wetter crossed the stripe in third ahead of Jason Schueller.

Bobby Moyer broke Ty Kleiner’s Pro Stock win streak, Kleiner had won four in a row at the SPI tracks before Sunday night. Moyer got out front early and took the short way around the track to the 15 lap feature win. Kleiner took second ahead of Mike Kline.

Mark Massey pushed his unbeaten win streak in the B-Modified division to eight features on Sunday night. Massey beat Scott Schurbon to the checkers.

B.J. Schmitt caught race leader Steve Dunkel on lap number 6 in the Hobby Stock feature and was able to take the lead and move on to the 10 lap feature win. Schmitt crossed the stripe ahead of Jason Rauen and Luke Goedert.

Brad Klaas made his first visit of the year to the Dubuque Speedway and visited victory lane after topping the 10 lap Farley Flyer feature. Klaas beat Mike Nihles to the checkered flag on Sunday night.

NASCAR Dodge weekly Series action will return to the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday night June 1st with East Dubuque Savings Bank night at the races. Race fans are encouraged to come out early and enjoy the classic car show which will begin at 4 p.m.
