West Liberty, Iowa: Brian Birkhofer took command early and went on to score the Coors Light Open Late Model Shootout feature win on Tuesday night at the West Liberty Raceway. Birkhofer actually made his most important pass of the night in the 8 lap fast dash by overtaking Billy Moyer for the second finishing position which placed him on the outside front row along side of pole winner Chris Simpson. The 50 lap main event took the green with Birkhofer taking command early. Despite the main being stopped for minor cautions Birkhofer was up to all challenges as he was clearly the class of the field on Tuesday night. Chris and Chad SImpson battled for second for much of the race until the late stages when Jason Feger was able to get between the two brothers. At the finish line Chris Simpson ran second to Birkhofer with Feger in third ahead of Chad SImpson. Dave Eckrich rounded out the top five.
The iWireless IMCA Late Models were also on the card on Tuesday night. Kyle Hinrichs led the 30 lapper for the majority of the race until a late race caution bunched the field and allowed Brian Harris to make a winning move on the restart. Harris crossed the finish line ahead of Hinrichs, with Tyler Bruehning taking third.
Racing will continue on Saturday, August 9th at the West Liberty Raceway with Horn Automotive Kids Back to School Night featuring 2 main events in the Performance Concepts IMCA Modified division. Kids will be treated to back to school supplies plus a huge nickel scramble. Hot laps will get underway at 6:30 pm with racing to follow at 7 pm.
