AIKEY INHERITS WINNEBAGO CO BUD OPEN LATE MODEL SHOOTOUT VICTORYWinnebago Co Fairgrounds Jeff Aikey was in the right place at the right time to bag his first $6,000 Budweiser Open Late Model Shootout victory at the Winnebago Co Fairgrounds Speedway in Pecatonica IL on Tuesday June 12th. Starting the race tenth, Aikey picked his way through traffic to take the lead away from Gary Webb with six laps to go when a low tire began slowing the leader. Webb himself took the lead following a lap 33 restart when pole-sitter Steve Boley’s car faltered with mechanical difficulties. Up until that point, it appeared to be a rout as Boley rocketed away from the field on every restart, opening up over a full straightaway lead on the pack. Lapping slower cars by the ninth circuit, and escaping near disaster on lap 28 when one of the cars fighting to stay on the lead lap spun directly in front of him, Boley appeared infallible right up until he coasted to a stop on the backstretch with engine woes. Darren Miller thrilled fans with his second place finish after qualifying for the main event through the consolation. Miller was forced to start the 50-lapper on the tail of the field after pitting to repair damage caused during a first lap shunt. Rick Wendling faded to third at the checkers after running second most of the race, followed by Dennis Erb and Ryan Dolan. Gary Webb recovered from his flat tire to finish in the sixth position ahead of Denny Eckrich, Terry Huizel, Matt Furman and Tom Cannon. Scott Nesteby captured the Modified feature victory by leading every lap and surviving a late race challenge from Ryan Dolan. Dolan was able to look underneath the leader several times before breaking on the final lap, handing second to Ron Barker ahead of Scott Holbert, Jed Hurst and Tim Maurer. The next event on the big half-mile located at Winnebago Co Fairgrounds will be a $10,000 to win UMP Summer Nationals Series race held on Monday July 2nd. More than 60 of the Midwest’s top driver’s are expected to be in competition during the event, the first UMP sanctioned race ever at the historic facility.
