YANKEE DIRT TRACK CLASSIC LARGEST CAR COUNT EVER
(Farley, Iowa) The Yankee Dirt Track Classic
began life in 1978 at the old Hawkeye Downs dirt track in order to showcase the
local talent against the top drivers in the country. Founder Al Frieden moved
the event in 1988 to his new palace of speed, the Farley Speedway, fueling
growth that has turned the race into a celebration of speed, signifying the
passage of summer into fall. Simmon's Promotions took over the reigns for the
24th annual event, spurring even more changes and growth. This years car count
broke all the old marks when 340 cars passed through the gates of the Four-night
event. Wednesday night started the Yankee Dirt Track Classic off with seven
four-cylinder cars, 21 Fun Class cars, 35 Hobby Stocks, and 36 NASCAR Weekly
Racing Series Late Models. Thursday night the gates opened to the Deery Brothers
IMCA Late Models with 53 competitors wanting to become a Yankee Dirt Track
Classic Champion. 47 Pro Stocks also competed for bragging rights on Thursday
night. Friday Night every inch of the pit area plus some additional outside
parking became pit area as 89 Budweiser Open Late Models signed into the pits to
take their shot at the $15,000 first place prize. 52 of the fastest Modified
drivers in the country also checked in to do battle on the fast half-mile track.
Simmons Promotions Inc. anticipated with the
Larger purses and the availability for more drivers to compete in this years
Yankee Dirt Track Classic, that the car counts would increase, but would also
admit that they never expected to have 340 at this years Classic.
