IHM GRABS FARLEY TROPHY

NASCAR WEEKLY RACING SERIES
NILLA WAFERS/JOE NEMECHEK NIGHT
August 17th, 2001

Ace Ihm broke his run of recent bad luck by capturing his first NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model win of the season at the Farley Speedway during Joe Nemechek/Nilla Wafers Night on Friday August 17th.

Starting on the pole position, Ihm fought with Troy Bruder for the first two laps before taking over the lead.  While the lead battle was being waged, Dave Eckrich began marching towards the front after starting fourteenth.  Slipping underneath twelfth place starter and points leader Jeff Aikey on lap two, Eckrich continued his charge on the bottom of the racetrack by taking over the second position on lap six.  Erasing Ihm's comfortable lead in a matter of three laps, Eckrich benefited from when Ihm had to check up for lapped traffic on the ninth lap, sweeping underneath and into the lead.   It appeared to be Eckrich's race from there, putting a full straightaway lead and many lapped cars between himself and his pursuants.  Eckrich's lead was further enhanced after Aikey took over the third spot, challenging Ihm several times before a lap twenty caution.  A new race was on tap for the last five circuits when racing resumed, with Eckrich again profiting with track position from the Ihm/Aikey battle for second on the open racetrack.   Disaster struck two laps after the restart for Eckrich when his car coasted to a stop in the first corner with a malfunctioning rear end.  Ihm used the most of his surprise fortune, restarting the race on the point and using the cushion to cruise the last three laps while Aikey searched high and low for his fastest line around the racetrack.  Behind Ihm and Aikey, Darren Mish finished third ahead of Dan Gallant and Denny Eckrich.

Ron Barker tightened his Modified points battle with Ryan Dolan by taking home his fourth feature win of the season and cutting Dolan's margin to only twelve points with two weeks left in the season.  Barker fought with Scott Nesteby during the opening laps, swapping the lead several times prior to a lap six caution.  Barker dove underneath on the restart to take the lead away for good, opening up enough of a lead to survive a late race charge by Dan Chapman.  Chapman fell short at the checkers finishing second ahead of Steve Wetter, Dolan and Ken Kostenbader.  Jeff Valentine notched his first Pro Stock feature win of the season ahead of Dan Shelliam, Jeff Tharp, Ty Kleiner and Jeff Kennedy.  Kevin Duerr appeared to be in control early in the race, parlaying his pole position into a big lead, but struggled with failing brakes midway through the fifteen lap race, allowing Valentine to close in and take the lead away on lap nine.   Duerr was able to hang on to the sixth spot after a late race caution allowed him to cool his brakes.   Larry Benn was the surprise winner in Hobby Stock action.  Benn haunted leader Tom Boyes for the entire event, but fell back to the third spot as Jeff Reinert slipped in between him and the leader as the cars were taking the white flag.  Rienhert dove for the lead in the final corner of the race, forcing Boyes to take action and allowing Benn to stay on the throttle and pass them both as the trio was exiting the fourth corner with the checkers waving.  Boyes held on to second ahead of Reinert with TJ Leslein fourth and Jerry Merkes recovering from a flat tire on the opening lap to finish fifth.  Kelly Welter led every lap of the Fun Car feature, but found himself battling with points leader Chad Hallahan on the final lap.  Contact between the two in turn three of the white flag lap resulted in Hallahan spinning out, handing Welter his third win of the season.  Russ Yonkovic finished second while Ray Fawcett regained the points lead with his third place finish.

Only two opportunities remain for drivers to tune up for Yankee Dirt Track Classic, beginning with "Ride Your Harley to Farley" Night at the Palace of Speed this Friday, August 24th.  For more information on the Harley ride, contact Wilwert's Harley Davidson in Dubuque at 563-556-5601.  Hot laps are scheduled for 7 pm with racing to follow.  For more information contact Simmons Promotions at 563-744-3620 or online at www.simmonspromotionsinc.com.  For raceday updates and quick results afterwards, call your local McLeod USA InTouch Directory, category 3740 and 3741.
