MID-SEASON CHAMPS TO STEWART IN WEST LIBERTY

NASCAR WEEKLY RACING SERIES
WEST LIBERTY RACEWAY
June 16,2001

Kurt Stewart posted his second NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model feature victory of the season during Noel’s Tree and Crane Service Mid-Season Championships at the West Liberty Raceway on Saturday June 16th.

Kurt Kile took the early lead after a surviving a wild first lap that saw pole sitter Chad Holladay spin out of the fourth corner. Points leader Denny Eckrich got caught in the ensuing carnage, ending his evening along with Rick Wendling, who started the evening third in points. Kile battled with Skip Frey early in the race, opening up a comfortable lead before the next caution flag flew on lap ten. Holding off another challenge for the point, Kile again stretched out his lead as Frey began battling Stewart for runner-up spot. Using the top of the racetrack, Stewart eventually took over second on lap 20 and began setting his sights on Kile, 15 car lengths in the lead. Erasing that advantage by lap 22, Stewart began applying heavy pressure but was unable to complete the pass until the 26th circuit when Kile was forced to slow for lapped traffic. Shooting underneath and not looking back, Stewart had easy sailing until the lap 35 conclusion of the race, leading Kile, Frey, Gary Webb and Dave Eckrich across the line.

Gus Hughes took home the Miller Time Modified feature win in dominating fashion, taking the lead away from Terry Lawson on the second lap. With Hughes comfortably at the point, attention turned to the runner-up position with Lawson, Terry Walker and Russ Olson each taking turns occupying the position. Olson eventually prevailed despite smoking his left rear tire on wrinkled sheet metal during the last half of the event, ahead of Scott Megonigle, Walker and points leader Darrall Brick.

Points leader Matt Gilchrist posted his fifth Pro Stock feature win by capitalizing on a late race restart that negated leader Gary Beuter’s efforts to stretch his lead until the checkers. Running fifth on lap eight, Gilchrist had just inherited third when Dan Werener retired with mechanical difficulties just prior to the tenth lap restart. Gilchrist was unable to keep his racecar low enough on the track to pass Beuter initially, diving underneath entering the corners but pushing up in the middle and falling back into second each time. Finally on the final lap, Gilchrist made the bonsai move work for him, staying underneath Beuter as the cars raced down the backstretch and taking the lead as the pair raced through the final corner of the race. Darren Plett finished third ahead of Jason Gingrich and Chad Simpson.

Robert Barnes took home his first Hobby stock trophy after knocking on Larry Benn’s door several times before taking the lead away with three laps to go. Rounding out the top five were Bill Buttris, Dave Elliot and Jason Erwin.

NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action will continue next Saturday, June 23rd at the West Liberty Raceway with hotlaps scheduled for 6:30 pm.
