Aikey, Nesteby, Maher, Hughes & Wills Score Season Championship Wins At Farley Speedway; 2002 Point Titles To McGowan, Barker, Shelliam, Leslein & Roth
The 2002 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge came to a close on Friday night with the running of Greenwoods Grocery Season Championship races at the Farley Speedway.
The 35 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature saw Jeff Aikey notch his ninth feature win of the 2002 season at the Farley Speedway. Aikey got to the front by advancing from the outside of the fourth row. Aikey used both the high and low grooves on his way to the front. Josh McGowan dogged the 77 of Aikey the last 20 laps and was able to get alongside on a couple of occasions but was unable to take the lead. Aikey took a very close win, McGowan’s second place finish allowed him to earn enough points to overtake point leader Denny Eckrich, who was scored 16th after dropping out with mechanical failure. Ace Ihm and Tom Cannon rounded out the top four in the Season Championship main event.
Scott Nesteby continued his hot streak in the Quarter Master Modified division by winning the season championship main event. Nesteby chased down leader Jed Hurst and took over the lead at the halfway mark of the feature. Nesteby went on to take the win ahead of Larry Herring and Hurst. Ron Barker needed only to take the green to secure his point title in the Modified division.
The Pro Stock season championship feature win went to John Maher. The 15 lap feature saw Maher lead the race flag to flag but he was challenged by Ty Kleiner in the late going. Kleiner ran a very close second ahead of Dan Shelliam and Jeff Kennedy. Shelliam’s third place finish was good enough to secure the track point title.
Mike Hughes emerged from a pack of contenders to take the lead and go on to score the NASCAR Hobby Stock season championship win. Hughes took the checkers ahead of B.J. Schmidt and Jason Rauen. T.J. Leslein used a sixth place finish to earn the track title in the Hobby Stock division.
Young Adam Wills scored his first ever feature win by topping the 21 car starting field in the Farley Flyer division. Wills out ran John Flury and R.J. Simon on his way to the championship win. 15 year old Jason Roth used a seventh place finish to secure the track point title.
