Bair Scores First Ever Late Model Win At West Liberty
Racing action was held on Saturday, April 13th as the West Liberty Raceway hosted the second night of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge for the 2002 season. Another outstanding field of competitors was in attendance with 121 drivers signed in to do battle on a very sticky and super fast race track on Crossroads Convenience Store night at the races.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation 25 lap feature took to the track with 28 starters taking the green flag. Skip Frey bolted into the lead from his pole position start and held the top spot until a lap nine caution bunched the field up. On the restart Jeff Bair shot to the outside of Frey and took over the top spot. Bair was able to ride the cushion in his CRE Rocket chassis and extend his lead. A late race caution setup a two lap dash to the finish due to a lap 23 spin. Ray Guss Jr. had advanced into the second position and looked to have something for Bair, but Bair was much too strong in scoring the impressive win. The win was Bair’s first in a Late Model and was very special considering it was at his home track plus the fact that he beat a very strong field of competitors. Guss Jr. crossed the line in second ahead of Frey, Brian Harris and Denny Eckrich.
Ronny Barker made the return trip to West Liberty on Saturday night and the Dubuque driver came away with the 20 lap Miller Time Modified feature win. Barker was in contention for the lead early, advancing from his second row start. Barker took the lead from fellow Dubuquer Jason Schueller and survived several late race challenges in taking the win. The final challenge came from defending Modified track champion Scott Megoningle who came all the way from the 17th starting position to contend for the win. Barker proved to be too much for Megonigle, at the checkers Barker held a two car length advantage. Megonigle took second ahead of Gerry Brick.
The Dadco Corp. /Parker Stores Pro Stock feature saw another first time visitor to victory lane. Matt “Bones” Bodman scored his first ever Pro Stock win in only his second time racing a Pro Stock. Bodman moved into the Pro Stock division after a very successful term in the Hobby Stock division. Bodman led the entire 15 lap flag to flag feature event. Monte Hayden finished second ahead of Gary Beuter.
Defending track champion Jeremie Thompson scored the NASCAR Hobby Stock Feature win on Saturday night. Thompson took the lead late in the race and went on to hold off Darren Voss for the win. Davey Elliott took the checkers in third.
Racing continues every Saturday night featuring the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented Dodge at the West Liberty Raceway with racing slated for 7 p.m.
