Klinkkammer wins Second In A Row in NASCAR Late Models; Darrall Brick Rides Out Scary Flip in Mods At West Liberty

The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series at the West Liberty Raceway was hosted by Mills Marine and the Principal Financial Group plus Sperry Engines provided an extra $500 to the Miller Time Modifieds on Saturday night. The night provided lots of excitement in all forms on Saturday night.

The NASCAR Late Model Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Feature event took to the track with 29 drivers taking the green flag. Kurt Kile took the lead and went on to lead the first ten laps before Mike Klinkkammer caught the leader setting up a great battle for the lead. The two raced side by side for a couple of laps before “Klink” was able to move into the lead. While Klinkkammer was moving away an excellent race developed for ht second position. Tom Christensen turned in his best finish of the season in taking second at the checkers. Christensen had moved into second only to be passed by Ray Guss Jr. but Christensen was able to regain second on the white flag lap and nip Guss at the line by a car length. Todd Davis and Kurt Kile rounded out the top five.

The Miller Time Modifieds took the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and ran off their first 13 laps caution free as Ryan Dolan was building a commanding lead. The race was red flagged for a lengthy period following one of the scariest accidents ever witnessed by this reporter. As the field entered turn three on lap 17 a couple of cars got together causing a chain reaction that sent Darrall Brick over the right front wheel of Terry Walker. The contact catapulted Brick up and over the wall in turn three. The car barreled rolled several times in the fencing coming to rest upside down outside of the track. Brick was able to crawl out of the mangled car with help from his brother Gerry. Fortunately Brick was uninjured in the scary accident. When the race finally resumed, Dolan went on to score the win over Larry Herring and Robbie Verbeck.

Andy Eckrich extended his point lead in the Dadco Corp/Parker Stores Pro Stock division by winning the 15 lap main event. Eckrich steadily worked to the front from his sixth row start and took the lead from Justin Gingerich on his way to the win. Justin ran very strong all race long in taking second over his brother Jason. Gary Beuter and Dale Franklin rounded out the top five.

Defending track Champion in the NASCAR hobby Stocks, Jeremie Thompson scored the 10 lap feature win on Saturday night. A lap six caution bunched the field, on the restart leader, Jason Lange, was unable to hold off Thompson. Larry Benn came on strong late in taking second ahead of Dan Albright and Lange.

Saturday, August 24th will be Noels Tree and Crane and Midwest Frame and Axle Kids Back to School night. A $1,000 nickel scramble will be held for the youngsters along with bike give aways and back to school supply prizes. Racing will get underway at 7 p.m.
