Klinkkammer Scores Third Straight Win At West Liberty
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge was back in action at the West Liberty Raceway on Hoosier Tire, Midwest Frame and Axle, Noels Tree and Crane Service Kids Back to School night at the Races on Saturday night. A big $1,000 dollar nickel scramble and bike giveaways were presented by the Noels and Zooks.
Mike Klinkkammer continued his recent hot streak in the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Models by winning his third straight feature event. The 25 lap main event went caution free on Saturday night. Matt Furman took command early and appeared to be on his way to the win, but a leaking head gasket forced Furman to drop out giving the lead to Klinkkammer. Ray Guss Jr. advanced from his eight position start to take second at the checkers ahead of Ron Boyse. Boyse turned in his best finish of the season celebrating his mother’s birthday at the track Saturday night.
Larry Herring chased down early race leader David Hemsted and took over the lead in route to the Miller Time Modified feature win. Herring used the low side of the tacky track to out run the strong field of Modified drivers. Todd Stoolman continued his string of top five finishes in taking second ahead of Rick Hixson.
Jeff Tharp did not get to race on Friday night due to the rainout at the Farley Speedway, so he decided to venture south to the West Liberty Raceway. Without a point average, Tharp started the 15 lap Pro Stock main event in the 14th position; steadily he worked to the front taking the lead on lap 10. Tharp and point leader Andy Eckrich battled back and forth the last five laps with Tharp taking the checkers just ahead of Eckrich. Gary Beuter turned in another strong performance in taking third.
Matt Fulton scored his fifth win of the 2002 season in the NASCAR Hobby Stock feature event on Saturday night. Fulton took advantage of a second row start and quickly took the lead on his way to the flag to flag feature win. Todd Hansen came from deep in the pack to take second and extend his point lead. Dan Albright crossed the stripe in third.
Saturday, August 31st will be KWCC Season Championship racing at the West Liberty Raceway. The night will be headlined by a 35 lap NASCAR Late Model Championship feature. The West Liberty Raceway will then remain idle until the Annual Liberty 100 to be held Friday and Saturday, September 20 and 21.
