Harris Wins First Ever NASCAR Late Model Feature At West Liberty

Waste Management and Gatorade hosted the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge at the West Liberty Raceway on Saturday night August 3rd as racing returned to the Muscatine County Fairgrounds.

Young Brian Harris added his name to the winners list on Saturday night as he scored his first ever NASCAR Late Model Feature win. Harris piloted his Rocket chassis sponsored by Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation to the impressive win leading flag to flag in the main event which started 29 cars. Harris had the field bunched up on him a couple of times but he was up to the challenge and was not to be denied on this night. Jeff Bair advanced all the way from his 20th position start to run a very impressive second. Steve Johnson ran with the leaders the entire distance in taking third ahead of point leader Denny Eckrich. Tom Christensen came from 16th to take the checkers in fifth.

Terry Walker scored the Miller Time Modified feature win in only his third night out in his new car. Walker has had a frustrating season but was able to put it all behind him in scoring the win collecting the Waste Management hardware and the Gatorade Bonus money. Todd Stoolman ran very strong on Saturday night coming from his fifth row start to challenge Walker for the win. Stoolman led the 18th lap but Walker was able to regain the lead in scoring his first win of the season. Stoolman settled for second ahead of Darrall Brick and Ray Partida.

The Dadco Corp/Parker Stores Pro Stocks provided the fans with the closest finish of the night.  With the laps winding down Andy Eckrich was closing on race leader Matt (Bones) Bodman. The two were coming to the checkers with a lapped car in between the two leaders. The race to the checkers off of turn four was three wide with Bodman on the outside. Bodman nipped Eckrich by a couple of feet at the checkers to score the big win. Eckrich settled for second ahead of Jason Gingerich and Chris Simpson.

Larry Benn drove his Chevy Monte Carlo to the non-stop Hobby Stock feature win. Benn led flag to flag taking the Gatorade win over Davey Elliott and Jared Collins.

The Mississippi Valley Car club was in town for a reunion on Saturday and a few of the old timers brought their cars to the track and put on a couple of 8 lap feature events. Terry Mattly took the win in the Vintage Coupe race over Jim Thurston. The Nostalgic Late Model feature win went to Craig Stepanek over Jamie Huff.

NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action presented by Dodge will continue on Saturday, August 10th at the West Liberty Raceway with race time slated for 7 p.m.
