West Liberty Mid-Season Titles To Furman, Herring, Eckrich & Fulton
Saturday, June 8th the West liberty Raceway hosted the Mid-Season Championship NASCAR Weekly Racing Series sponsored by Noels Tree and Crane Service of Iowa City. A large crowd took in the action on a perfect evening for racing.
Matt Furman scored his second win in a row in the very tough NASCAR Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Model division. The 25 lap feature saw pole sitter Bobby Sexton take the lead take command early. Furman worked to the front from his 3rd row start and set up a challenge for the lead. Furman and Sexton swapped the lead back and forth for several laps before Furman was able to secure the lead on the fifteenth lap. Furman went on to score the win and pick up the bonus money from Noels Tree and Crane. Sexton turned in a fine performance in taking second ahead of Todd Davis and Brian Harris. 35 NASCAR Late Model drivers were on hand Saturday night.
Larry Herring scored his first NASCAR Miller Time Modified feature win of the 2002 season in capturing the Mid-Season Championship title. Herring took the green flag in the 20 lap feature back in the sixth row. Herring found the low groove to his liking in steadily working to the front. Herring took the lead from Terry Lawson and went on to take the checkers ahead of Darrell Brick and Gerry Brick.
Andy Eckrich is sponsored by Noels Tree and Crane Service and his win on Saturday night made for a big celebration in victory lane. Eckrich, the defending Dadco Corp/Parker Stores Pro Stock track champion, won the 15 lap Mid-Season championship feature after a great battle with second place finisher Rusty Daufeldt. The two young talented drivers put on quite a show for the fans with plenty of wheel to wheel racing for the lead throughout the title run. Point leader Chad Simpson crossed the stripe in third.
Consistent front runner Matt Fulton picked up another feature win in the Hobby Stock Mid-Season Championship Race. Fulton came from his 7th position start and took the lead near the midway point of the race. Last week’s winner Bill Butteris ran another strong race in taking second ahead of Jared Collins.
Saturday, June 15th the West Liberty Raceway will present twin 25’s for the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Models in addition to a full program of racing in the Modified, Pro Stock and Hobby Stock divisions. Race time will be slated for 7 p.m.
