Furman Scores First NASCAR Late Model Win Of Season At West Liberty
Gerry Brick, Bodman & Butteris Also Take Wins
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge provided the fans with a great night of racing on 3M night at the races on Saturday, June 1st at the West Liberty Raceway. A 16 race program was run very swiftly with the final checkered of the night waving at 9:40 p.m.
Matt Furman scored a clean sweep in the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model division. Furman took the lead at the dropping of the green flag from his outside front row starting position and went on to build a comfortable lead. A lap 7 caution erased Furman’s lead bringing several strong runners into contention. Point leader Denny Eckrich was able to use the caution to his advantage by picking up several positions. Eckrich was able to get into the second position on lap 17 but was unable to catch the strong running Furman. At the checkers it was Furman scoring his first win of the 2002 season over Eckrich, Brian Harris and Steve Boley.
Gerry Brick ran second a week ago in the Miller Time Modified division to his brother Darrell. This week Gerry was not going to run second to anyone. Brick shot to the front from his 7th position start and went on to score an impressive win over Larry Herring. The 20 lap race was only slowed once for a minor caution. Bret Frieden took third at the checkers ahead of Rick Hixson.
The Dadco Corp/Parker Stores Pro Stocks ran their double dip night on Saturday night, meaning they were competing for twice their normal purse. The 15 lap feature was an excellent race that was run flag to flag. Matt (Bones) Bodman scored his second consecutive feature win on the West Liberty ½ mile. Bodman worked to the front from a fourth row start taking the lead with seven laps complete. Bodman went on to hold off a fast closing Andy Eckrich in taking the win.
Bill Butteris scored his first ever NASCAR Hobby Stock win at West Liberty topping a strong field in the10 lap main event. Butteris held off a late race charge by Matt Fulton in taking the win by less than a car length. Todd Hansen finished very strong in taking third at the checkers.
Saturday, June 8th the West Liberty Raceway will host Noel’s Tree &Crane Service Mid-Season championship races with a 30 lap NASCAR Late Model feature headlining the program. Race time will be 7 p.m.
