Darren Mish Scores First Ever Late Model Win At Dubuque Speedway
Dubuque, Iowa: East Dubuque Savings Bank and Drew Cook & Sons Excavating hosted the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series on Sunday night June 1st at the high banked 3/8 mile clay track Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway. The exciting swift run racing program provided lots of great racing with the final checkered flag waving at 9 p.m.
The Denny Ansel family was also on hand on Sunday night awarding trophies to the feature winners. Ansel a longtime competitor at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway lost his battle to cancer and was laid to rest on May 28th. Ansel holds the distinction of being the only driver to race in every season at the Dubuque Speedway in it’s 35 year history. Denny Ansel is also a member of the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway Hall of Fame.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature saw Darren Mish score his first ever Late Model feature win. Mish has come close on several occasions, but Sunday night belonged to Mish. The low side proved to be Mish’s preferred line, leading the race from flag to flag. Mish held off a host of veteran drivers in scoring the impressive win. Jeff Aikey took advantage of a late race caution and advanced from seventh to take second at the checkers. Steve Johnson finished a very close third ahead of Bobby Hansen and Denny Eckrich.
Ron Barker chased down race leader Danny Bohr and made the pass on lap number 9 and went on to record the feature win in the NASCAR Modified feature. Bohr held off Mark Schulte in taking second in the 20 lap feature.
Jeff Kennedy shot to the front from his fourth row start in the Pro Stock feature taking the lead on lap number 2 and went on to record the win. Kennedy took the checkers ahead of Jeff Reinert and Mike Weidemann.
Mark Massey extended his unbeaten streak in the B-Modified division by topping the 10 lap feature. Massey took the win ahead of Jeff Moore and Jacob Seegmiller.
K.C. Ansel led the hobby stock feature for 9 and ¾ laps only to be nipped at the checkers by B.J. Schmitt. The margin of victory was less than ½ a car length. Mike Hughes took third ahead of Steve Dunkel.
Joe Zrostlik took the lead just past halfway in the Farley Flyer feature and went on to record his first win of the 2003 season. Jason Roth took second ahead of Steve Stackis. NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action will continue at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday, June 8th with hot laps taking to the track at 6 p.m.
