Dubuque Speedway Season Championship Win To Luke Merfeld
Dubuque, Iowa: Sunday, August 24th the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway hosted the 2003 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Season Championship racing event. In addition to the season championship main events the two track point fund races were held in four divisions.
Luke Merfeld put his #21 on the top side of the track early and went on to record the 35 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model Season Championship feature. Merfeld held his line perfectly despite being challenged by track champion Jeff Aikey. The number 77 of Aikey started the race back in the 10th position and was able to work to the front taking second from Mark Merfeld on lap number 18. Aikey raced the remaining 17 laps on the rear bumper of Luke Merfeld. Merfeld was not rattled by Aikey and drove a near perfect race in taking the win. Aikey ran second and secured the 2003 point championship, third went to Mark Merfeld, fourth to Jeremiah Hurst and rounding out the top five was Steve Johnson.
The Farley/Dubuque two track point fund race for the Late Models saw Jeff Aikey score the 8 lap win and add another $1,000 to his bank account. Dale Hackwell took second and earned $700 for his efforts. Bobby Hansen took third and the $600 paycheck.
The NASCAR Modified feature saw a first time winner make his way to victory lane. Mel Saffran led the 20 lap season championship main event for the first five laps before Jerry Miles was able to take a short lived lead. Miles led two laps before Saffran was able to get back out front and go on to lead the remaining 13 laps in scoring an impressive win. Mark Schulte turned in another great performance in taking second ahead of Sean Rupp and Scott Nesteby. Skip Culbertson took the fifth position.
The NASCAR Modified two track point fund race saw Dan Bohr shoot to the front getting by Scott Nesteby to take the win and the $650 winnings. Nesteby ran second and collected $500, third and the $400 payday went to Ron Barker.
Bobby Moyer had quite a night on Sunday night scoring the win in the 15 lap NASCAR Pro Stock season championship race and also taking the win in the two track point fund race. Moyer took the lead on lap number 11 of the Pro Stock season championship feature from Scott Riechers and went on to hold off Gary Crawford for the win. Ty Kleiner took third ahead of Riechers and Jeff Valentine.
The two track point race win netted Moyer $700 for the six lap win, Jeff Reinert took second and took home $600 and third and the $500 check went to Ty Kleiner.
The NASCAR Hobby Stock season championship main event win went to Jason Rauen who used a late race pass to take the lead on the white flag lap. Rauen took the win over Mike Hughes, Jerry Merkes, Kelly Welter and Luke Goedert.
The Hobby Stock two track point fund 6 lap race was won by Jim Turpin, the win netted Turpin $400, second place and a $350 check went to B.J. Schmitt. Third place and a $325 check went to Mike Hughes.
SPI would like thank Ed White and Darrel Barklau for all of their efforts in putting together the outstanding two track point fund program. Mark Massey put an exclamation point on a great B-Modified season by winning the 10 lap season championship race. Ted Engler ran second ahead of Jay Garvey and Bruce VanGordon.
The Farley Flyer season championship feature win went to John Flury. The Dodge Neon of Flury beat Randy Leehan to the checkers. Becky Roth took third ahead of her brother Jason Roth. John Lomey took fifth.
Point titles for the 2003 season went to Brian Kammerude in the Farley Flyer division, Steve Dunkel won the championship in a very close battle in the NASCAR Hobby Stock division. Mark Massey took the B-Modified title, Ty Kleiner was crowned the Pro Stock champion, and Jeff Aikey took the Late Model track championship. The NASCAR Modifieds will finish their point season on Sunday, August 31st.
The Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway season will come to a close on Sunday, August 31st with a Bud Shootout. The Bud Late Model will run a 50 lap feature with $6,000 going to the winner. All classes will be in action in this season ending special event. Hot laps will get underway at 6 p.m.
