Todd Davis Scores West Liberty Spring Championship Win - Way, VanDusen & Albright Take Championship Wins
West Liberty, Iowa: Saturday night April 12th the weather was nearly perfect for a mid April racing event. A large crowd turned out to take in the Spring Championship racing event at the West Liberty Raceway. An outstanding early season car count of 116 drivers signed in to take their shot at the opening night victories.
40 Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation late Models took part in 4 qualifying heats and two consolation events before the 50 lap main event took to the speedway. Ray Guss Jr. drew the pole for the main and looked to be the car to beat on Saturday night. Guss Jr. was leading the race when misfortune struck, a broken axle on the sharp looking #12 forced Guss to the pits and the lead was up for grabs. The race saw Todd Davis emerge from a pack of contenders on lap 21 to take the point position. Davis went on to lead the remaining 29 laps. Davis was pressured by defending track champion Denny Eckrich late in the race but Davis was up to the challenge in taking the win. Steve Johnson ran in the lead pack the entire race in taking third ahead of Luke Merfeld and an outstanding opening night run was turned in by Tom (the Dog) Christensen in taking fifth.
The Miller Time Modified feature saw 26 drivers of the 34 car field take the green in the 20 lap feature. Mike Thomas led the race early before being overtaken by Todd Stoolman. Mike Zogg was able to move out front on lap number 4 and lead until young speedster Mitch Way took the lead on lap number 7. Way started the feature back in the 24th position and charged to the front taking command and driving on to his second consecutive Spring Championship Modified win. Todd Stoolman ran up front the entire race in taking second ahead of Mike Zogg and Robbie Verbeck was in the lead pack all night in taking fourth.
The NASCAR Pro Stock feature win was a very popular one for Atalissa’s Brian VanDusen. VanDusen lead half of the race after taking over the point from Chris Simpson. VanDusen drove the Corner Tap house car to the win over Jason Gingerich, Ty Kleiner and Matt (Bones) Bodman rounded out the top four.
Dan Albright led from flag to flag in taking his first ever feature victory at the West Liberty Raceway in the NASCAR Hobby Stock division. Albright’s Spring Championship win was hard earned in driving a perfect race taking the checkers ahead of Stan O’Brien, K.C. Ansel and Jim Schrier.
Regular Saturday night racing will get underway this Saturday, April 19th at the West Liberty Raceway with a new start time in effect for the 2003 season. Hot laps will take to the track at 6 p.m. with racing to follow at 6:30 p.m.
