Guss Jr. & Herring Make First Visits To West Liberty Raceway Victory Lane - Chad Simpson & Allbright Repeat
West Liberty, Iowa: The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series was in action on Saturday, June 14th with Craftsman night at the races. Mother nature provided perfect conditions and the night went very smooth with the final checkered flag of the night waving at 9:10 p.m.
Ray Guss Jr. has had a season that he would just as soon forget up to this point in the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model division. Saturday night belonged to Guss as he shot out front early and went on to lead the caution free race nearly flag to flag. Guss jr. had built a comfortable lead but point leader Denny Eckrich made the race very exciting in the closing laps as the leaders worked through lapped traffic. Eckrich caught Guss and set up a last lap battle for the win but came up just short at the checkers. Matt Furman took the third position ahead of Dana Wells and Jeff Bair.
Another driver who has had a frustrating early part of the 2003 season has been Larry Herring. The Miller Time Modified driver scored his first win of the season on Saturday night and has helped his position in the season point standings with three good finishes in a row at the West Liberty Raceway. Herring was able to take advantage of a late race caution and move by race leader Rich Smith in route to the victory. Smith took second ahead of Johnny Spaw, Ryan Dolan and Terry Walker rounded out the top five.
Davey Elliot saw his hopes for his first ever NASCAR Pro Stock win go up in flames as his engine expired on lap 13 of the Pro Stock feature while leading. Chad Simpson used the late race restart and shot by Skeet Smith to record the win on Craftsman night at the races. Smith ran second ahead of Mike Welsh, Troy Phillpott and Gary Beuter.
Dan Allbright scored his second feature win in a row at West Liberty topping the NASCAR Hobby Stock main event. Allbright out raced Dave Schrier to the checkers on Saturday night. Matt Greiner took third ahead of point leader Stan O’Brien and Dave Wada.
Hollywood Graphics will be hosting the races on Saturday, June 21st at the West Liberty Raceway. Action will take to the track with hot laps at 6 p.m. followed by racing.
