Guss Jr. Scores NASCAR Late Model Win On Corner Tap Night At the Races
West Liberty, Iowa: Saturday, June 28th the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing action at the West Liberty Raceway was hosted by the Corner Tap of Atalissa, Iowa. The rains that moved through the area earlier in the week and again on Friday night made for very tacky and extremely fast track conditions.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model main took the green with veteran driver Ray Guss Jr. taking the lead from early pace setter Nick Marolf on lap number seven. Guss went on to build a comfortable lead before the field was bunched up following a late race caution. Denny Eckrich had worked to the front and was hounding Guss on the restart. Eckrich was able to take a short lived lead but his daring move did not stick as Guss regained the lead and went on to record the win. Eckrich slid over the cushion in turn one on the final lap and faded to a seventh place finish. Guss took the win over Steve Boley, who debuted a new car over the weekend. In two races Boley has recorded a win and a second place finish with the new chassis. Jeff Bair recorded another top five taking third ahead of Nick Marolf. Nick ran in the lead pack all feature long in turning in an outstanding run in taking the fourth position. Todd Davis rounded out the top five.
Terry Lawson has been a man on a mission as of late in the Miller Time Modifieds at the West Liberty Raceway. Prior to the start of the 2003 season Lawson had not won a race at the West Liberty Raceway. Following Saturday nights races, Lawson has now visited victory lane four times this season. Lawson took the lead on lap seven after race leader Brett Frieden lost a motor. Lawson went on to take his second win in a row at the West Liberty Raceway. Rick Hixson ran second on Saturday night emerging from a pack of contenders battling up front. Jim Vest took the third position ahead of Rob Verbeck and Todd Stoolman.
The Double D Performance Pro Stock feature turned into a family affair as the Simpson brothers finished first and second in the 15 lap feature. Chad Simpson drove to the win crossing the stripe ahead of Chris Simpson. Jason Gingerich turned in another strong run taking third ahead of Matt Gilchrist and Skeet Smith.
The NASCAR Hobby Stock feature saw first time winner of the season Dave Wada take the checkers first. Wada was able to move into the lead getting by Rick Curtis on the seventh lap of the ten lap feature. Stan O’Brien extended his point lead by taking the runner-up position on Saturday night. Curtis took third ahead of Matt Greiner and Doug Yates.
The West Liberty Raceway will host a Bud Shootout on Saturday, July 5th. The Bud Late Models will battle it out on the West Liberty ½ mile clay for 50 laps with a $6,000 pay check awaiting the winner. The support classes will race under a draw and redraw format with no track points being awarded. Hot laps will get underway on the 5th at 6 p.m. with racing to follow.
