Furman Scores NASCAR Late Model Win On Iowa Realty Night At West Liberty
West Liberty, Iowa: Near perfect weather greeted a nice crowd on Lou Ann Lathrop Iowa Realty night featuring the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series on Saturday night at the West Liberty Raceway.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model 25 lap feature took the green flag with Nick Marolf getting out front right away and moving out to a comfortable lead. Marolf has been in search of his first NASCAR Late Model win and if he continues to be as smooth as he was on Saturday night his first win will be coming soon. Marolf led for the first 23 laps before Matt Furman was able to finally overtake Marolf. Furman had been challenging Marolf but was unable to get by until the move on lap 23 going down the back chute worked. Furman went on to take the checkers ahead of Marolf, Steve Boley and Denny Eckrich. Jason Utter turned in a fine run in rounding out the top five.
Rich Smith is enjoying a great season in the Miller Time Modifieds driving a car owned by Tim Zeman. The combination has proven to be very successful and Smith notched another feature win on Sunday night. Smith led the race flag to flag taking the 20 lap feature win over Jason Schueller, Rick Hixson, Johnny Spaw and Mitch Way. A strong field of 25 Miller Time Modifieds took the green flag on Saturday night.
The Double D Performance Pro Stocks feature was a real nail biter. Troy (Stinky) Philpott nearly scored his first ever feature win on Saturday night. Philpott took the lead from Monte Hayden on lap number 9 and went on to lead until the white flag lap when Chad Simpson was scored the leader by a very narrow margin. One last challenge came up just short for Stinky as he finished second to the strong running Chad Simpson. Monte Hayden took the checkers in third ahead of Tom Struve and Chris Simpson. Dave Wada continued his recent hot streak in the NASCAR Hobby Stock division in scoring his third consecutive feature win. Wada overtook early leader Ron Schruers and went on to take the 10 lap feature win. Scotty Pratt took second ahead of Rick Curtis and Dave Schrier.
The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series will open the 2003 Muscatine County Fair on Wednesday night, July 16 with a full program of point racing. The Fair race will have a 7 p.m. start time.
