Muscatine County Fair Wins to Bair, Herring, Simpson & Schruers
West Liberty, Iowa: The 2003 Muscatine County Fair opened on Wednesday night with the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing program highlighting the day at the Fair. The large crowd was treated to an action packed night of racing on a very fast tacky race track.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature took to the speedway with Mike Klinkkammer taking immediate control and going on to lead the first eight laps before a strong running Jeff Bair was able to catch “Klink”. A very unfortunate incident happened when the two front runners made contact sending the #45 of Klinkkammer into the front chute wall causing extensive front end damage. On the restart Bair took command and went on to score the 25 lap feature win. Bair started the feature in the fifth row and was able to get to the front quickly on the tacky track. Steve Boley came on strong in the later half of the race and finished a close second. Denny Eckrich, Matt Furman and Ray Guss Jr. rounded out the top five.
Larry Herring drove his #96 to the Miller Time Modified feature win on Wednesday night topping a strong field in the 20 lap feature. Herring took the lead from Jim Vest on lap number 9 and went on to record the win. Rob Verbeck found the tacky track to his liking and raced to a second place finish ahead of Johnny Spaw and Todd Stoolman.
Chad Simpson came from the sixth row in the Double D Performance Pro Stock feature to overtake Dan Lange on lap number 11 in route to another impressive win. Simpson took the win by a comfortable margin over a pack of drivers battling for the runner up spot. Matt Gilchrist took a very close second place finish ahead of Gary Crawford and Dale Franklin.
Ron Schruers took the lead at the dropping of the green and went on to lead the NASCAR Hobby Stock feature flag to flag. Dave Schrier took the checkered flag in second ahead of Stan O’Brien and Dave Wada. The next racing event at the West Liberty Raceway will feature the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series on Saturday, July 26th. Hot laps will take the green flag at 6 p.m. with racing to follow.
