Boley Best in Bud Shootout At West Liberty Raceway
West Liberty, Iowa: Saturday, July 5th the West Liberty Raceway held the third leg of the Bud Shootout weekend swing promoted by Simmons Promotions and sponsored by Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation, Hollywood Graphics, Auto Acres Used Parts and T&D Machine.
The night belonged to Steve Boley and the Ron Alpen Ford #26 race team, Boley scored a clean sweep taking the win in the third heat, the Hollywood Graphics fast dash and the 50 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation feature event. Boley started from the pole by virtue of his dash win and went on to lead the race flag to flag. Boley was able to survive a few minor cautions and proved to be up to all challenges in taking the win on a very smooth and wide ½ mile clay track West Liberty Raceway. Skip Frey started second and dropped back to fifth early in the race before coming back strong late in the race. Frey was able to regain second with three laps to go but was unable to catch the quick running Boley. Brian Harris turned in another fine run on Saturday night. Harris ran third on Friday night in the Bud Shootout at the Farley Speedway and then duplicated that performance on Saturday night with another third place finish. Todd Davis ran in second the majority of the race before crossing under the checkers in fourth. Mike Klinkkammer was involved in an early race yellow and went to the tail before marching all the way through the field to take a very impressive fifth place finish.
The Miller Time Modifieds saw Terry Lawson draw the pole for the 20 lap feature. Lawson has been very hot lately and it looked as though he would be the class of the 27 car field. Lawson went on to lead the first 14 laps before Rich Smith was able to catch Lawson. With Lawson working low and Smith riding the top side, Smith was able to move his Tim Zeman owned #8 to the lead and move on to a very impressive win. Rick Hixson drove to a third place finish ahead of Terry Walker and Johnny Spaw.
The family affair continued on Saturday night in the Double D Performance Pro Stock division. The Simpson brothers dominated the 15 lap feature with Chad chasing down his brother Chris and moving into the lead on lap number 11. Matt Gilchrist came on strong in the later stages of the race to take third ahead of Bruce Miller.
The Hobby Stock feature went caution free on Saturday night with Jerry Merkes leading the first six laps before Dave Wada was able to move into the lead. Wada went on to score the win over Merkes, Ron Schruers, Stan O’Brien and Matt Greiner.
Prior to the start of the racing action on Saturday night, following a wedding ceremony that included four race cars, Jeff and Cheryl Cress were presented to the crowd. Jeff (Andre) planned the wedding with the cars of Brian VanDusen, Nick Marolf, Ray Guss Jr. and Dana Wells as the backdrop for the ceremony. The drivers accompanied the wedding couple adorned in racing attire.
The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series will be back in action at the West Liberty Raceway on Saturday, July 12th with hot laps set to take the green at 6 p.m.
