Boley Makes Late Race Charge To Win Season Championship At West Liberty
West Liberty, Iowa: The 2003 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series came to close with an action packed night of racing at the West Liberty Raceway. KWCC Country, 93.1 hosted the action on a very nice evening for racing.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature took the green with Nick Marolf establishing himself as the man to beat. Marolf paced the field until lap 31 when misfortune struck. The driveshaft broke on Marolf’s car ending his bid for his first NASCAR Late Model win. Denny Eckrich had advanced to the front and was realigned for the restart beside Steve Boley. The two West Liberty hotshoes raced laps 32 and 33 side by side before Boley was able to gain a slight advantage. Eckrich went into turn one very hard on the white flag lap causing the 50 to slide deep into turn two and that allowed Matt Furman to take over second. As the checkers flew it was Boley, Furman, Eckrich, Jason Utter and Chad Simpson completing the top five. Denny Eckrich had a very good year scoring 7 feature wins in 18 starts and will earn another West Liberty Raceway NASCAR Late Model track championship.
The season championship point invert put young Mitch Way on the front row for the Miller Time Modified feature. Way, who has had a season of feast or famine, was not to be denied on Saturday night. Way led all 20 laps on his way to a very impressive win. Rick Hixson ran second ahead of Jim Vest, Larry Herring and Terry Walker. Larry Herring’s fourth place finish was enough to move him into the point lead and secure the 2003 Miller Time Modified track championship.
The season championship Double D Performance Pro Stock feature produced a first time winner on Saturday night. Dale Franklin put his number 7 out front and raced to a very impressive feature win. Chad Simpson ran a distant second to Franklin. The win was Franklin’s first since joining the Pro Stock division several years ago. Brian VanDusen turned in a fine run in taking third ahead of Jason Gingerich. Chad Simpson had built such a large lead in the Pro Stock division that he has moved up to the Late Model class and did not need to start the final two point races and was still crowned the Double D Performance Pro Stock champion.
Jason Rauen made his third appearance in a row at the West Liberty Raceway and came away with his second feature win. Rauen came from deep in the pack and took the lead on lap number 8 of the 10 lap feature. Rauen went on to hold off Dan Allbright for the win. Dave Wada crossed the stripe in third ahead of Rick Curtis and Dave Schrier. Matt Greiner only needed a ninth place finish to secure the NASCAR Hobby Stock track point title.
The season will come to a close at the West Liberty Raceway with the 7th annual running of the Liberty 100. The race will be contested on Friday & Saturday, September 19th and 20th. Qualifying and heat races plus the race of Champions will be held on Friday night. Last chance races and main events will be run on Saturday being headlined by the $7,000 to win Liberty 100.
