Denny Ansel Memorial Wins To Denny
Eckrich, Barker, Brokus, Merkes, Seegmiller & Wills At Dubuque Speedway
Dubuque, Iowa: The weather finally cooperated allowing the Dubuque Speedway to
run the second night of NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action for the 2004 season on
Sunday night. The night was run in honor of longtime Dubuque racer Denny Ansel.
Ansel was a fixture at the Dubuque Speedway for 35 years and he lost his battle
with cancer in May of 2003. The night was also a fundraiser for Ansel’s favorite
charity, the “Make A Wish Foundation”. A total of $1,671 was raised in honor of
Ansel for the outstanding charity.
The headliner of the night on the track was the 25 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor
Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature. Bobby Hansen took control from the outside
front row and appeared to be on his way to his first NASCAR Late Model feature
win. But misfortune struck on lap number 10 when the engine expired in the #9
Late Model. Ed Sanger took over the lead briefly before Denny Eckrich moved the
“Flyin 50” out front. Eckrich went on to record the win over Steve “Ace” Ihm,
Darren Mish, Gary Webb and Jeff Aikey. Eckrich worked high and low on the
multi-grooved track advancing from a 13th position start to take the win.
Ron Barker completed a perfect weekend by scoring the 20 lap feature win at his
hometown track in the NASCAR Modified 20 lap feature. Barker took the lead from
Mike Weidemann on lap number 9 and went on to lead the final 11 circuits.
Weidemann took second at the stripe ahead of Mark Schulte and Bob Dominacki.
Jim Brokus battled his way to the front in the 15 lap Pro Stock feature and took
the lead from Levi Benn on lap number five. Brokus came from the sixth row and
went on to take the top spot ahead of Bobby Moyer, Jason Robbins and Benn.
Jerry Merkes held off a late race challenge by Jason Rauen to record the 10 lap
NASCAR Hobby Stock feature win. Merkes drove his Monte Carlo to the win over
Rauen, B.J. Schmitt and Jason Riechers.
Jacob Seegmiller scored the feature win in the B-Modified division. Seegmiller
held off the constant challenges of K.C. Ansel in taking the checkers first.
Mark Massey took third ahead of Jeremy English.
Adam Wills drove his Ford Escort to the feature win in the Farley Flyer main
event. Wills took the win over Joe Zrostlik, Brian Kammerude and Becky Roth.
NASCAR Racing will continue at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway on
Sunday, June 13th with hot laps slated to take the green at 6 p.m.
