Luke Merfeld Tops NASCAR Late Models On Precision Transmission Night At Dubuque Speedway
Dubuque, Iowa: Precision Transmission of Dubuque, Iowa hosted the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing action on Sunday night at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway. 110 drivers packed the pit area, all looking to try and make their way to victory lane.
Luke Merfeld was the fourth different driver to hold the lead in the 25 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature. Merfeld took over the lead on lap number 17 and went on to record his first feature win of the season driving the Simon’s Trucking sponsored Late Model. Merfeld battled his way to the front advancing all the way from the sixth row. Rob Moss turned in another great run coming from mid pack to take second at the finish line. Dan Shelliam ran third ahead of Jeremiah Hurst. Hurst made his first start at Dubuque since undergoing open heart surgery late in May. Jeff Tharp rounded out the top five on Sunday night.
Ron Barker was involved in a first lap incident that saw him head into the pits with a rear tire knocked down. Barker recovered to come back and battle Scott Nesteby for the lead as the race passed the midway point. Barker took over the top spot on lap number 12 and went on to record the win. Mark Schulte rode the top side of the track to a second place finish ahead of Steve Wetter and Nesteby.
Jimy Brokus was looking for his third win of the weekend in the Pro Stock division but Booby Moyer had other ideas on Sunday night. Brokus led until lap number 11 before Moyer was able to sneak by and take the lead and go on to lead the final three circuits for the win. Brokus held on for second ahead of Jeff Kennedy and Bob Bollon.
Jason Rauen took advantage of his teammate, Duane Ahmann’s, misfortune late in the race and came home the Hobby Stock winner on Sunday night. Ahmann drifted off of the top of the track in turn three on lap number 9 and Rauen picked up the win after running second. Jerry Merkes took second ahead of B.J. Schmitt and Ed McIntyre.
Mark Massey took the lead in the B-Modified feature on lap number 4 and went on to score the feature win in the 10 lap main event. Massey took the win ahead of Jacob Seegmiller and Jeremy English.
Becky Roth completed her clean sweep weekend with her third win in as many nights at SPI tracks. Roth topped a starting field of 23 Farley Flyers. Roth took the lead on the white flag lap and went on to record the win over Brian Kammerude and Jeremy Campbell.
The 2004 Dubuque County Fair will host 2 nights of racing action with the Julien Dubuque Classic being held on Wednesday, July 28 with hot laps at 7 p.m. Sunday, August 1st will be race day at the fair as racing action will bring the fair to a close with hot laps scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
