Andy Eckrich & Greg Chapman Score First Ever NASCAR Wins At Dubuque Speedway Season Championships
Dubuque, Iowa : The 2004 NASCAR Season Championship races were held on Sunday, August 29th at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway. The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series program included 7 features plus the running of the two track (Farley Speedway, Dubuque Speedway) point fund races. The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Models ran a 35 lap season championship main event. The feature saw young Andy Eckrich score his first ever NASCAR Late Model victory. The race took the green with Jeremiah Hurst leading the race the first 7 circuits before Darren Mish took over the top spot. Mish led one lap before retiring with a suspension problem. Hurst took over again and went on to lead until lap nineteen when Eckrich took over the point position. Eckrich went on to build a comfortable lead before a caution slowed the race on lap number 25. Eckrich bolted away on the restart and went on to score a comfortable win over Hurst, Jeff Aikey and Gary Webb. The NASCAR Modifieds ran 2 features on Sunday night. The first 20 lap feature saw Greg Chapman take the lead at the dropping of the green. Chapman was pressured early by Steve Wetter who actually led the 5th lap. Chapman regained the race lead on lap number 6 and went on to score his first ever NASCAR Modified feature win. Jerry Miles ran a strong race in taking second ahead of Mark Schulte and Wetter. The second Modified feature saw track point leader and NASCAR Heartland Region point leader, Ron Barker score an impressive win. Barker was able to move by Wetter and into the lead on lap number 11 and go on to score the win over Scott Nesteby, Wetter and Mark Schulte. The 15 lap NASCAR Pro Stock season championship race provided the fans with a photo finish. Jeff Reinert led the race from lap number three until the flag stand as the checkers waved. Reinert was unable to hold off a hard charging Jimy Brokus. The winning margin was less than a foot by Brokus. Jeff Kennedy ran third ahead of Keith Kiernan. Jim Turpin was able to get out front early and go on to score the NASCAR Hobby Stock Season Championship win. Turpin got to the checkers ahead of Luke Goedert and Jerry Merkes in the ten lap feature. Mark Massey added an exclamation mark to his very successful B-Modified championship season by winning the season championship race. Massey took the win over Jacob Seegmiller and Tim Current. D.J Laughlin added another feature win to his resume on Sunday night topping the Farley Flyer championship race. Laughlin took the win over teammate Joe Zrostlik and Brian Kelly. In addition to the season championship races the drivers eligible for the two track point funds took part in the first half of their races. Drivers that race at both the Farley Speedway and Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway and compete in at least 75% of the scheduled events at each track are racing for a share of the $32,000 posted point fund. The second half of the races will be held this Friday, September 3rd at the Farley Speedway. The NASCAR Late Model 2 track point fund race was won by Jeff Aikey scoring the 10 lap win over Darren Mish and Steve Johnson. Ron Barker took the win in the 8 lap Modified race besting Mark Schulte and Jerry Miles. Jimy Brokus topped the Pro Stock division taking the win over Jeff Kennedy and Mike Hughes. Jason Rauen took the Hobby Stock win over Luke Goedert and Jerry Merkes. Jacob Seegmiller took the B-Modified win over Mark Massey and Jed Frieburger. John Flury took the Farley Flyer win getting to the checkers ahead of Joe Zrostlik and Becky Roth. Drivers earning 2004 NASCAR Dubuque Speedway Track championships on Sunday night were Late Models-Jeff Aikey, Modifieds-Ron Barker, Pro Stocks-Bobby Moyer, Hobby Stocks-Jason Rauen, B-Modifieds-Mark Massey and Farley Flyers-Becky Roth. In searching the record books, it is believed that Becky Roth has etched her name in the books as the first female driver to ever win a track championship at the Dubuque Speedway. Becky is also on target to equal that feat at the Farley Speedway.
