Aikey Tops Dodge Night At Dubuque Speedway - Rupp Nips Barker in Modifieds
Dubuque, Iowa: Sunday night the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series was back in action at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds with Dodge night at the races. The high banked 3/8 mile clay track was very fast providing the fans with another action packed night of stock car racing.
Jeff Aikey extended his point lead in the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR late Model division by scoring the win in the 25 lap main event. Aikey advanced from his 12th position start and took the lead on lap number 10 in route to the win. Aikey took the checkers ahead of a fast closing Steve Johnson. Bobby Hansen ran up front all race long and finished in the third position ahead of Rollie Frink and Dan Shelliam.
The NASCAR Modified feature provided the fans with an outstanding battle between the Dubuque hot shoes. The first four finishing positions went to hometown drivers on Sunday night. Ron Barker took the lead on lap number 3 coming form his usual 12th position start and appeared to be on his way to another win. Sean Rupp had other ideas as he battled his way to the front using the low groove of the track. Rupp took the lead on lap number 11 and battled with Barker the remaining nine laps. The two circled the track side by side lap after lap with Rupp holding off Barker at the finish line by ½ a car length. Jason Schueller crossed the finish line in third ahead of Scott Nesteby and Bob Dominacki.
Gary Crawford came from deep in the pack to score another NASCAR Pro Stock win on Sunday night. The veteran from Independence, Iowa took the win over Ty Kleiner and Jim Brokus. Crawford passed race leader Brokus on lap number 11 of the 15 lap feature on his way to the win.
It is always special when a driver wins for the first time in his racing career, that happened on Sunday night in the B-Modified feature. Ted Engler took the lead from Tim Current on lap number 8 and went on to record his first ever feature win. Engler took the win holding off point leader Mark Massey at the checkers. Scott Moffitt took third ahead of Jacob Seegmiller.
The NASCAR Hobby Stock win went to Jerry Merkes on Sunday night. Merkes took the win over Jim Turpin, Steve Dunkel and Jason Rauen.
Brian Kammerude came from a tenth position start to take the Farley Flyer feature win over John Flury. Randy Leehan took third ahead of Troy Bauer.
The three race series hosted by the Dubuque County Fair will begin on Sunday, July 20th with a full program of NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing with hot laps at 6 p.m. The Dubuque County Fair will host races on Wednesday, July 23rd and the wrap up of the Fair will be race day at the Fair on Sunday, July 27th.
