Luke Merfeld Tops NASCAR Late Models
As Dubuque County Fair Comes To A Close
Dubuque, Iowa: The 2003 Dubuque
County Fair came to a close on Sunday night July 27th with the NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Series in action in front of a huge crowd.
Hometowner Luke Merfeld delighted his
fans by capturing the 25 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model
feature. Luke took the lead from his brother Mark on lap number 10 and went on
to hold off point leader Jeff Aikey in scoring the win. Luke found the high
groove to his liking in sailing around the high banks of the Dubuque Speedway.
Gary Webb worked the low groove in taking third ahead of Jeremiah Hurst and
Bobby Hansen.
Skip Culbertson led the NASCAR
Modified feature for the first 18 laps before sliding to a stop in turn number
one after nearly spinning the car. The caution for Culbertson was the only
caution of the 20 lap race and on the restart Mike Burbridge went on to hold off
Ron Barker and Dan Bohr. The win was the first ever for Burbridge. It was
certainly a hard fought win for Burbridge in taking the checkers by a few feet
over Ron Barker. Steve Wetter and Jason Schueller rounded out the top five.
The NASCAR Pro Stock feature win went
to Gary Crawford of Independence, Iowa. Crawford shot to the front early and
went on to record the feature win over Bobby Moyer and Jeff Valentine.
Jason Seegmiller won his second
B-Modified feature of the weekend. Jacob followed up his Farley win on Friday
night by topping the 10 lap feature Sunday night at the Dubuque County Fair.
Seegmiller took the win over Mark Massey and Jay Garvey. Jim Turpin chased down
race leader Kelly Welter and took the lead on lap number 8 of the 10 lap NASCAR
Hobby Stock feature. Turpin went on to record the win with Welter in second
ahead of B.J Schmitt.
Joe Zrostlik scored the win in the
Farley Flyer feature event. Zrostlik bested the 26 car starting field on Sunday
night. Rick Hammer took second in the 10 lap feature just ahead of John Flury.
The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series will
return to action at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday, August 3rd
with hot laps scheduled for 6 p.m.
