Eckrich Tops Big Field Of Late Models To Win Bud Shootout At Dubuque Speedway

 

Sunday, August 31 Dubuque, Iowa: The curtain came down on the 2003 racing season at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway with the running of a Bud Open Late Shootout on the high banked 3/8 mile dirt track. 119 total cars signed in to do battle on Sunday night including 44 Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Bud Late Models.

 

The headliner of the night was the 50 lap Bud Shootout which turned out to be everything that the fans had anticipated. 8 different drivers took their turns at leading throughout the race. Darren Mish led very early before being the first car to fall out. Mish had won the Hollywood Graphics Fast dash which earned him the pole position for the 50 lap feature. Other drivers who ran out front early included Mitch Johnson, Josh McGowan, Ray Guss Jr. and Darrel DeFrance. Steve Boley took over the top spot on lap number 17 and went on to pace the field for the next 20 laps. Denny Eckrich was able to make a slick move that garnered him the race lead on lap number 37. Eckrich went on to move away to an impressive win and pickup the $6,000 paycheck. The drive of the night was turned in by Gary Webb, the 56 of Webb was sent to the tail following a early race caution and Webb came all the way back to take second at the checkers. Darrell DeFrance came from his 16th position start to take third ahead of Boley, Chris Smyser rounded out the top five.

 

In addition top the Bud Late Models all the support classes were also in action for the season finale at the Dubuque Speedway. Veteran racer Scott Nesteby topped the Modified feature on Sunday night scoring the win over Mel Saffran, Jason Schueller and Steve Wetter. Ron Barker was crowned the 2003 Modified track champion at the Dubuque Speedway on Sunday night and finished the season with a seventh place finish.

 

Bobby Moyer continued his recent hot streak at the SPI tracks in the Pro Stock division on Sunday night by scoring another feature win. Moyer took the 15 lap feature win over Jeff Kennedy and Gary Crawford.

 

Tim Seegmiller scored the B-Modified feature win topping the ten lapper ahead of Bruce VanGordon and Jay Garvey.

 

Duane Ahmann drove to the win in the Hobby Stock feature taking the checkers ahead of his team mate Jason Rauen. B.J. Schmitt ran third ahead of Jerry Merkes.

 

R.J. Simon led flag to flag in taking the feature win in the Farley Flyer division. Jason Roth took the checkers in second ahead of Jeff Jorgensen.
