03 NASCAR Late Model Champ, Aikey Opens 04 With Farley WinJohnny Spaw Scores First Ever NASCAR Mod WinBobby Moyer, Jacob Seegmiller, Jerry Merkes & Jake Blumer Score Wins
Farley, Iowa: The 2004 NASCAR Weekly Dodge Racing Series opener was held on Friday night at the Farley Speedway. The 2003 NASCAR Late Model Farley Speedway champion opened the 2004 season with a convincing win. Jeff Aikey drove to the win in his 10 lap heat race then drew the pole position for the opening night 25 lap feature. Aikey shot out front and drove to an impressive opening night win taking the checkers a half a lap ahead of the second place driver, Curt Martin. The race was slowed once in the early going for a minor caution but Aikey proved to be in control as he shot away from the field on the restart and went on to cruise to the NASCAR win. Aikey will be forced to start back in the field next week due to the 12 car invert. Curt Martin was extremely strong in advancing from a tenth position start to take second in the main event. Steve Johnson enjoyed a fine run in taking third ahead of Steve Boley, who advanced from the 16th position start. Brian Harris rounded out the top five on the opening night.
Johnny Spaw made his return to dirt Modified racing a couple of years ago and Friday night belonged to the Cedar Rapids driver. Spaw found the extreme top side of the racy track to his liking and sailed to the 20 lap NASCAR Modified win. The race was red flagged early for an incident in turns one and two that saw perennial Modified winner Ronny Barker end up on his top. Barker was unhurt and his car received minor damage but was unable to continue. Spaw scored his first ever NASCAR Modified win over Sean, Rupp, Korey Burmeister, Scott Nesteby and Randy Less rounded out the top five.
Bobby Moyer proved to be the class of the field in the NASCAR Pro Stock division, taking the 15 lap feature win with a strong run. Moyer took command early and easily outran Jim Brokus and Jeff Kennedy. Moyer took the lead on the first lap moving from the second row and never looked back in taking the win. Jerry Merkes drove his brand new Chevrolet Monte Carlo to the opening night NASCAR Hobby Stock win. Merkes wrestled the lead away from Jason Rauen on the white flag lap to take the win. Rauen limped across the finish line dropping to fourth with mechanical problems. B.J. Schmitt and Doug Yates followed Merkes across the finish line.
The B-Modified division produced a photo finish, with Jacob Seegmiller taking the win by a matter of inches ahead of defending track champion Mark Massey. Seegmiller used the low line in turns three and four to set up the dash to the checkers on the final lap. The two crossed the line in a virtual dead heat with Seegmiller coming out on top on the score sheets. Kenny Boyes ran third ahead of Leon Wilson. Jake Blumer scored his second win of the 04 season in the very tough Farley Flyer class. Blumer bested the 21 car starting field on Friday night. The opening night point win for Blumer came in taking the checkers ahead of Joe Zrostlik, Becky Roth and Tim Koppes.
The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series will continue on Friday, April 30th with hot laps to take to the “Palace of Speed” the Farley Speedway at 7 p.m.
