Farley, Iowa: The Farley Speedway hosted the annual Legends Night at the races with the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series in action on the high banked ˝ mile “Palace of Speed” the Farley Speedway. An excellent turn out of legend drivers were on hand to take part in the evening festivities.
The headliner of the night was the 25 lap NASCAR Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Model feature. The excellent crowd on hand was treated to some of the wildest Late Model racing witnessed this year. The threesome of Curt Martin, Steve Boley and Jeff Aikey swapped the lead back and forth as they raced three wide for approximately 10 laps in the mid part of the race. Martin finally broke free and led the last ten laps with a stronghold on the point position. Martin took the checkers and the Dubuque Hose & Hydraulics Legends night win over Boley and Aikey, Steve Ihm took fourth ahead of Dan Shelliam.
The hottest driver in all of the Midwest has to be NASCAR Modified driver Ron Barker, Friday night Barker notched his 10th win in a row at SPI tracks with another impressive performance. Barker was able to get by fellow Dubuque driver Scott Nesteby following a mid-race caution flag. Barker went on to record the feature win by a comfortable margin over Nesteby, Mark Schulte, Sean Rupp and Korey Burmeister.
The NASCAR Pro Stock feature saw a hotly contested battle between Jimy Brokus and Bobby Moyer. Moyer led early before slipping over the cushion in turn two allowing Brokus to take command and sail on to the 15 lap feature win. Moyer took second ahead of Levi Benn and Jeff Reinert. Jason Rauen shot to the front from a third row start and went on to take the win in the 10 lap NASCAR Hobby Stock feature. Rauen took the checkers ahead of B.J. Schmitt, Jerry Merkes and Randy Benn.
The B-Modified division had another first time winner on Friday night in what has become a very competitive racing division. This week Jeremy English put his #0 B-Modified in victory lane taking the win over Leon Wilson, Mark Massey and Jake Seegmiller.
22 drivers took the green flag in the Farley Flyer division on Friday night, of those 22 drivers, the field was comprised of 2 very talented females and 20 guys that did not want to get beat by the girls. That is what happened on Friday night as the two girls put a whipping on the guys. Jena Barthelemes and Becky Roth got away from the pack and went on to finish one and two way out in front of the guys. Barthelemes dedicated the win to her father who is a real racing legend, Bill Barthelemes had an outstanding career in Late Model racing on the Eastern Iowa racing circles. Becky Roth raced with Barthelemes in finishing a close second. Finishing in a distant third was Phil Holtz, Joe Zrostlik rounded out the top four.
The Vintage Coupes and Nostalgia Stock cars were our guests on Friday night and both classes ran 10 lap features. Terry Mattly took the win in the coupes over Dan Haack. Rob Koopman in his tribute to Curt Hansen Nostalgia car took the win over Brad Huff in his Darrel Dake look alike car. Friday night July 2nd the Farley Speedway will kick off the Holiday weekend with the Firecracker 40 featuring the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series being headlined by the 40 lap NASCAR Late Model feature.
