As the second half of the season rounds the corner toward the finish line, racing enthusiasts can experience action-packed thrills as the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) Progressive Insurance Flat Track Championship arrives at Farley Speedway on Saturday, August 7 for the first time ever. The track’s half-mile high-banked clay is conducive to some of the most competitive racing in the U.S. This race marks the tenth of 19 races in the national 2004 AMA Progressive Insurance Flat Track Series. “We can anticipate a highly competitive race,” said Joe Hayes, Farley Speedway. “Motorcycle fans have a huge presence in this area, so we are glad we can give people the chance to experience flat track racing at its best. There will be plenty of excitement for everyone who attends, from the riders to the audience.” While this is a new track for the all the riders, the conditions are similar to those of other clay half-mile tracks in the series. “As most of our fans know, riding on a clay surface means more than just horsepower or the rider with the fastest bike,” said AMA Flat Track Manager Bruce Bober. “It will come down to the rider with the best technique to win the race.” Farley Speedway is located on Olde Farley Road off of US Route 20. Pit gates open at 2:00 p.m., grandstand gates open at 4:30 p.m., with opening ceremonies beginning at 7:30 p.m. and racing starting at 8:00 p.m. Practice and qualifying heats begin at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively. With the second half of the season underway, the point race is heating up. All riders will be competing for the $40,000 purse and Chris Carr, the defending series champ and current series points leader, will be aiming for his sixth 2004 AMA Grand National title and fourth win of the 2004 season. Several top series riders, including hometown favorite Factory Harley-Davidson rider Rich King from Dysart, Iowa and Joe Kopp, who is only 14 points behind Carr, are sure to give him a run for his money. “We’re delighted to continue to be a part of this exciting series, and are thrilled to have a race in Iowa this year,” said Miriam Deitcher, motorcycle marketing manager for Progressive. “While we love bringing the series back to familiar tracks, we’re always looking to add new markets to the mix to allow more Progressive customers to experience the thrills of flat track racing.” Established in the early 1900’s, flat track racing is one of the oldest forms of motorcycle racing and the AMA Progressive Insurance Flat Track Championship is the premier flat track motorcycle racing series in the U.S. The nation’s best flat track motorcycle racers participate in the series, racing on outdoor oval dirt tracks that range from one-quarter mile to one mile in length. The series highlight includes the 25-lap main event, with riders racing within inches of one another at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, often ending in a photo finish. Immediately following the victory circle where the winners of the race will be announced, AMA Flat Track Manager Bruce Bober and the top three riders will hold a press conference and be available for photos and interviews.
