Mark Merfeld Scores Third Late Model
Win, Burmeister Takes First Ever Win In Mods At Dubuque Speedway
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series
presented by Dodge ran a very swift racing program on Hoosier Tire night at the
Speedway on Sunday, August 25th. The final checkered flag of the
night waved at 8:50 p.m.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation
NASCAR Late Model feature win went to Mark Merfeld. Mark and Kim Merfeld were
celebrating their 15th anniversary on Sunday night making the win
extra special. Merfeld is usually a high line racer but he found the center
groove to his liking Sunday night, Merfeld had to drive a perfect race as he was
pressured the entire distance by Steve Johnson. Merfeld scored the win by a
couple of car lengths at the checkered ahead of Johnson with a strong finishing
Ace Ihm taking third.
Korey Burmeister of Glen Haven,
Wisconsin added his name to the winners list on Sunday night scoring the 20 lap
feature win in a very tough Modified division. Burmeister emerged from a pack of
cars late in the race to take the lead. Burmeister was challenged late in the
race by Scott Nesteby, who has been very hot as of late. Burmeister led only a
handful of laps but was able to out duel the veteran Nesteby for the win. Jason
Schueller ran third ahead of Sean Rupp.
John Walker took the 15 lap Pro Stock
win; it was the “Texas Ranger’s” first win of 2002 at the Dubuque Speedway.
Walker had won earlier in the season at the Farley Speedway. Walker drove a very
smooth race using the high side to out race low runner Ty Kleiner. Jeff Tharp
took third at the finish line.
B.J. Schmidt scored his second win of
the season in the NASCAR Hobby Stock division on Sunday night taking the ten lap
feature win ahead of Big Ed McIntyre. B.J. led the flag to flag race the entire
distance. Duane Ahmann took third in the main event.
Brian Kelly has raced three times in
the Farley Flyer division and Sunday nights feature win made his second in three
tries. Kelly drove his Cavalier to the win ahead of Steve Stackis and Jason
Roth.
Sunday, September 1st will
be the NASCAR Season Championship races at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. The
program will be headlined by a 35 lap NASCAR Late Model feature. The season
ending championship races will bring the curtain down on the 2002 season. Race
time will be 6:30 p.m.
