Webb Back In Victory Lane At Dubuque
Speedway
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series
action on Sunday night July 14th was sponsored by Wilson Brothers
Dodge of Dubuque on Dodge night at the races. In addition special trophies were
presented to all five feature winners in memory of Bud Frederick long time
Dubuque Speedway race fan, who passed away this last December.
Gary Webb, three time defending
NASCAR Late Model track champion, returned to victory lane on Sunday night
taking the checkers first in the 25 lap Late Model main event. Webb chased down
early race leader Bobby Hansen and was able to overtake Hansen using the low
line of the very wide race track. Webb went on to take the win holding off a
late race challenge by Darren Mish. Hansen followed Mish across the line in
third ahead of fourth place finisher Jeff Aikey.
Jason Schueller scored his second
consecutive feature win in the NASCAR Modified division. Schueller came all the
way from the back of the pack to overtake leader Ron Barker with 15 laps
completed in the 20 lap main event. Schueller was working the bottom of the
track as Ryan Dolan came on strong on the extreme high side. Dolan was able to
finish second to Schueller and was closing in the late stages of the race. Scott
Nesteby took third at the finish line ahead of Jed Hurst and Barker.
Jeff Tharp came from deep in the pack
to score his third Pro Stock feature win on Sunday night. Tharp had his car set
to work low on the track and was able to catch race leader Jeff Kennedy and make
the pass in route to the win. Last week’s winner Jeff Reinert took third.
The closest finish of the night was
in the Hobby Stock division. Steve Dunkel won his second consecutive feature win
and did so by leading the race no more than 20 feet. Dunkel charged on the top
line of the track coming to the checkers and nipped Jerry Merkes by a nose at
the finish line. Merkes, Dunkel and Jim Turpin took the white flag three wide
with no clear advantage on the last lap. Turpin settled for third at the finish
ahead of Mike Hughes.
Jason Roth scored his first win of
the 2002 season at Dubuque on Sunday night, taking the win in the Farley Flyer
class. Roth was elated with the huge trophy presented by the Frederick family.
Levi Benn took second in the 10 lap feature ahead of Randy Leehan.
Racing will continue on Sunday, July
21st at the Dubuque Speedway with race time slated for 6:30 p.m.
