Aikey & Ihm Score Late Model Wins on
Craftsman Night At Dubuque Speedway
The Dubuque County Fairgrounds
Speedway hosted Craftsman Tools Night a the races on Sunday, June 30th.
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge featured twin 25 lap features
for the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Models.
The first feature saw Jeff Aikey
score his second feature win in a row on the high banked 3/8 mile dirt track.
Aikey was able to hold off the persistent challenges from 2 time defending track
champion Gary Webb in scoring the win. Denny Eckrich turned in another strong
performance in taking third in the opening feature of the night. The second 25
lap feature belonged to Steve (Ace) Ihm. Ace put his Hawkeye Boat Sales #11 on
the top side of the track and led the race flag to flag. Darren Mish ran a very
smooth race in taking second to Ihm, Jeff Aikey came from his 12th
starting position to take third in the second feature.
The NASCAR Modified feature provided
the fans with a very spirited battle for the lead for the entire 20 laps. Bob
Dominacki put his Stealth Race cars #5D on the top side of the track early and
set sail. Ron Barker shot to the front from his 12th position start
and was able to take over the second position on the third lap. The final 17
laps saw Barker work high and low to try and overtake Dominacki. Barker was
unable to get by the very smooth Dominacki and settled for second. Jason
Schueller was within striking distance the entire race and settled for third.
The Pro Stock feature was a battle of
Jeff’s on Sunday night. Jeff Valentine led the first half of the race before
Jeff Tharp was able to take over the lead in route to another feature win.
Valentine crossed under the checkers in second ahead of Bobby Moyer.
The NASCAR Hobby Stock feature was
won by Jim Turpin making the second time in 2002 that Turpin has visited the
Dubuque Speedway victory lane. Turpin shot low on the start and took the lead
from his second row start before one lap was completed. Turpin went on to lead
all laps of the main event. Mike Hughes took second ahead of Larry Benn.
Brian Kammerude drove his Cavalier to
the Farley Flyer feature win on Sunday night taking his third feature win of the
season. Kammerude scored the win over last weeks feature winner Randy Leehan.
The Dubuque Speedway will host the
last leg of the 4 day Budweiser Open Late Model Shootouts on Sunday, July 7th.
