Season Championship Wins To Ihm, Barker, Moyer, Rauen & Kennedy; 2002 Point
Titles Go To Webb, Schueller, Tharp, Dunkel & Leehan
The 2002
NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge came to a close on Sunday night
with the running of Dottie’s Café Season Championships at the Dubuque County
Fairgrounds Speedway.
The 35 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor
Insulation NASCAR Late Models 35 lap feature took to the speedway with Luke
Merfeld and Steve Johnson shooting to the front by working the low groove on the
smooth track. While the battle was being waged on the bottom Ace Ihm was making
his way to the front using the high line of the track. Ihm was able to catch and
move by the leaders around the 15 lap mark. Ihm led the remainder of the race as
the fast groove shifted to the middle of the track. Luke Merfeld took the
checkers in second ahead of Gary Webb. Webb used his third place finish to
secure his fourth consecutive NASCAR Late Model track championship at the
Dubuque Speedway.
The 20 lap Modified feature saw
several drivers take their turn at leading. Early it was Bob Dominacki, and then
Jason Schueller took over and led for several laps before Ron Barker was able to
take the lead following a restart. Barker went on to win his 30th
feature event of the 2002 season. Sean Rupp ran very strong all race long and
finished second ahead of Jason Schueller. The third place finish for Schueller
earned him the track point title.
Bobby Moyer found the low groove to
his liking on Sunday night and out raced the field to the championship trophy in
the Pro Stock division. Moyer took the lead from Skip Culbertson and went on to
out race Ty Kleiner for the win. Jeff Tharp used a 4th place finish
to garner the track point title.
Jason Rauen advanced from his third
row start and took the win in the10 lap NASCAR Hobby Stock feature over Larry
Benn and Ed McIntyre. Steve Dunkel ran sixth on Sunday night and his consistency
all year long earned him the track championship.
Danny Kennedy drove his Toyota to the
Dotties Café season championship win in the Farley Flyer division. Kennedy led
the race flag to flag in taking the win ahead of Keith Kiernan and Jeff
Jorgensen. Randy Leehan scored his first ever track championship by finishing in
the sixth position.
Dubuque Speedway drivers will receive
their awards at the SPI banquet to be held January, 18th, 2003 at the
Palace Ballroom at the Farley Speedway.
