The Farley Speedway hosted night
number two of the 2002 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge on Friday,
April 26th. Another excellent crowd braved the chilly conditions to
take in an action packed night of racing.
Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, IL. has
established himself in the early going of 2002 as a force to be reckoned with
in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series. Guss Jr. will be in competition at least two
of the Simmons Promotions tracks and will be contending for the NASCAR Midwest
Region Championship. Guss Jr. was in top form on Friday night and worked to the
front from his fourth row start, Guss was battling with Jeff Aikey for the lead
as the 10 lap mark approached. Guss secured the lead and held off numerous
challenges by Denny Eckrich to score the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late
Model feature victory. Guss took the checkers in the 25 lap feature by two car
lengths over Denny Eckrich with Dave Eckrich crossing the stripe in third.
Ron Barker scored his second
consecutive feature win in the Quarter Master Modified division. Barker started
deep in the field and worked his way to the front using both the top and bottom
of the wide fast track. Barker caught race leader Jed Hurst on the tenth lap of
the 20 lap feature, the two battled for the next five laps before Barker was
able to move into the lead for good. Barker went on to an impressive win over
Hurst, Mark Schulte turned in an excellent run in taking third ahead of Steve
Kohli.
The Pro Stock feature belonged to
Andy Eckrich, the youngest of the three racing Eckrich brothers led the 15 lap
Pro Stock feature from flag to flag. A first lap melee sidelined strong
contenders John Maher and Kevin Schroeder. The race then went green to checkers
with Eckrich dominating, Ty Kleiner took second after a fierce battle for the
runner up position, Dan Shelliam nipped Jeff Kennedy for third. Kennedy was
later DQ’d for failing to make weight.
23 Hobby Stocks took the green in the
feature on Friday night. The race was slowed twice for minor cautions, the final
restart set up a two lap dash to the finish. T.J. Leslein used the restart to
his advantage and shot past race leader Jason Rauen to move into the lead and
moved away to score an exciting win. Rauen followed Leslein across the finish
line in second ahead of Ed McIntyre.
Jason Roth scored his second
consecutive feature win in the Farley Flyer division. Roth came from the back
and overtook leader Mark Jaeger on his way to the win.
Racing will continue at the Farley
Speedway on Friday, May 3rd with hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing to
follow.
