Aukland Takes $10,000 Win in Renegade Series Race At Farley
Speedway
The Farley Speedway hosted the
Renegade Dirt Car Series on Saturday, July 20th on a very warm night in front of
a large enthusiastic crowd. The traveling Superstars of Dirt Track Late Model
racing were on hand to do battle with the local standouts.
The Renegade Dirt Car Series format
included four Brodix heat races, the Isky cams fast dash and two Mastersbilt
chassis B-Mains prior to the running of the 75-lap feature. The top six in time
all qualified through their heats setting the lineup for the fast dash which
determined the starting lineup for the first three rows of the feature event.
Greg Lucas won the fast dash by using a slingshot move in turn four of the final
lap to get by Dan Schlieper. Lucas set the pace for the 75-lap feature but was
quickly challenged by a host of top guns. Local hot shoe Denny Eckrich took the
lead from Lucas and began to build on his lead. The race was bunched up for a
restart, when the race resumed Rick Aukland began to apply the pressure to
Eckrich. Aukland was able to move into the lead near the midway point of the
race and the popular Ohio driver was able to hold the point the remainder of the
race in earning the $10,000 paycheck. The real hard charger of the race was
Chub Frank, by virtue of Renegade points Frank was granted a provisional
starting spot, which aligned him in the 23rd position. Frank steadily worked to
the front and finished the race in third position. When the checkers flew on the
75 lap main event, Aukland was followed across the line by Denny Eckrich, Frank,
another local driver who enjoyed a terrific run, Skip Frey, and Billy Drake
rounded out the top five. The local drivers again proved that they could race
with the best drivers in the country. 14 of the 26 drivers who qualified for the
Renegade Dirt Car Series event were local Late Model standouts.
In addition to the high powered
Renegade Dirt Car Series, Farley Speedway Pro Stocks, Hobby Stocks and the
Farley Flyers were also in competition. Feature winners on Saturday night
included Ty Kleiner in the Pro Stocks over Jeff Tharp, the Hobby Stock feature
was won by Larry Benn crossing the line ahead of Jerry Merkes and the Flyer win
went to Becky Roth beating Loras Feldmann to the checkers.

Renegade DirtCar Racing Series Stop At Farley To Aukland
Rick Aukland of Zanesville,OH captured his second
Renegade DirtCar Racing Series sanctioned main event victory of the season
Saturday pocketing the $10,000 "Farley 75" at Farley Speedway in Farley,IA.
Starting fifth aboard the Ostrom Painting and Sandblasting/GVS Racing/Rocket
Chassis/Malcuit Racing Engines No. 12 Aukland Racing Pontiac Grand Prix, Aukland
grabbed the lead from Denny Eckrich on lap 39 and then raced away to a more than
two second margin of victory over the eighth starting Eckrich.
"Boy, we needed this", stated a very happy Aukland. "We haven't really been good
all season long but we are starting to get there. We weren't that good in the
heat nor the dash but the guy's on the crew went to work and gave me a great
race car for the main. It was a little loose to begin with but as the race wore
on the car really came around. Now, we just have to keep it going".
Chub Frank, who had to use a series point provisional to make the race, roared
from his 23rd starting spot to finish third. The two-time defending RDRS
champion regained the point lead by 120 points over Mike Balzano who suffered a
DNF when he blew an engine on lap 68 while racing among the top 10. Skip Frey
rode home fourth with Billy Drake fifth followed by Steve Shaver in sixth with
Darren Miller, Greg Lucas, Dan Schlieper and 24th starting Rod Conley rounding
out the top ten finishers.
Front row starters Lucas and Schlieper brought the 26 car starting field to the
green flag with Lucas powering into the lead at the end of the first lap ahead
of Schlieper, Shaver, Miller and Drake. Contact on the backchute sent Balzano
spinning backwards bringing out the first of seven caution periods in the race.
Once the green replaced the yellow, Drake blew by Miller for fourth but the
caution flew again on lap 3 when Jay Johnson spun to a stop in turn two.
One lap after going back to green Miller regained the fourth spot from Drake
with Eckrich blowing past both Drake and Miller for fourth on lap 5. Caution
again on lap 6 for a tangle between Shawn Negangard and Steve Boley slowed the
pace and sent Boley pitside with a broken radiator. With the race back munderway
Lucas pulled out to a four car margin over Schlieper. Miller worked his way back
into fourth on lap 7 only to have Eckrich return the favor the next circuit.
Eckrich then grabbed third from Shaver on the next lap quickly closing on
Schlieper and taking the runner-up spot on lap 11. Eckrich ran down Lucas in one
lap taking the lead on lap 12.
By lap 25, Eckrich had opened up a nearly ten car length margin over Aukland who
had worked his way into second. Lucas sat third with Frey now fourth and
Schlieper fifth trailed by Miller, Drake, Rob Toland, Shaver and Ray Guss Jr.
Eckrich's huge lead was taken away on lap 33 when Todd Davis slowed to a stop in
turn four putting Aukland directly behind the leader. Aukland pulled alongside
of Eckrich on the restart leading lap 34 by a nose but Eckrich came right back
to lead laps 35 through 38. Aukland continued to use the low groove with Eckrich
up high with Aukland taking what proved to be the final pass for the lead on lap
39.
With 25 laps to go, Aukland enjoyed a huge advantage over Eckrich with Schlieper
third, Drake fourth and Frey fifth followed by Frank, Lucas, Guss Jr., Miller
and Balzano. Cautions on lap 51 for debris and lap 53 for Balzano who stopped
with a flat right reat tire slowed the pace but not Aukland. After each restart
Aukland simply pulled away from Eckrich opening up a sizeable advantage which he
kept to the finish.
The $43,000 event drew 36 drivers to the semi-banked 1/2 mile speedway with
Miller earning the CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the Clock" time trial award with
his quick lap at 19.150 seconds. BRODIX,INC. heat race wins fell to Miller, Curt
Martin, Eckrich and Lucas while Balzano and Todd Davis grabbed the MASTERSBILT
RACE CARS "B" Mains with Lucas copping the ISKY RACING CAMS dash.
