Tharp Scores Fall Classic Win At
Farley Speedway; Jim Turpin, Brink & Dave Turpin Take Wins
The 2nd Annual “Fall
Classic” presented by Tyson Foods and Chandler/Metelman was held on Saturday,
October 5th at the Farley Speedway. The special night of stock car
racing featured Pro Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Farley Flyers and the Limited Hobby
Stocks.
The 40 lap Pro Stock feature took to
the speedway with Ty Kleiner sitting on the pole by virtue of his fast dash win.
Kleiner and Jeff Tharp, outside front row starter, battled for the early portion
of the race before Tharp was able to establish control of the lead position.
Tharp led the race using the high groove and was able to pull away from the
field even though the field was bunched on his bumper on a few occasions due to
yellow flags. Tharp was scored the leader the entire 40 laps and the win netted
a cool $1,000 for the Dubuque driver. 2002 “Yankee” Pro Stock champion, Andy
Eckrich ran a very strong race in taking second ahead of Chris Simpson, who
advanced all the way from a 21st starting position. Jason Schueller
and Chad Simpson rounded out the top five.
The Hobby Stock 25 lap feature saw
fast dash winner Jim Turpin take off from his pole position start and led the
race flag to flag. Jason Rauen applied constant pressure to Turpin but Turpin
held his line perfectly in scoring the big win. Rauen took second at the
checkers ahead of Jason Udelhoven and Scott Reichers.
Al Brink earned the pole position for
the 15 lap Farley Flyer feature by winning the six lap fast dash. Brink led the
first three laps before pulling into the pits. The crew made repairs to the
Dodge Neon of Brink and he was able to get back on the track without losing a
lap. Brink proceeded to work all the way back through the pack regaining the
lead on lap 11 and went on to the lead the final four laps for the win. Keith
Kiernan took second at the finish line ahead of Rich Hammer.
Dave Turpin took the 10 lap feature
win in the Limited Hobby Stock class. Turpin took the win ahead of Jeff Johnson
and Rick Rymerz.
The Fall Classic will bring the
curtain down on the 2002 season at the Farley Speedway.
SPI will be releasing the 2003 season
schedule in the near future.
