Aikey Again In FarleyJeff Aikey stayed hot at the Farley Speedway on Friday June 13th, notching his sixth NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model feature win in nine events held so far in 2001. Starting the event twelfth, Aikey rocketed to the front early by dicing traffic high and low to advance ten positions during the first two laps before the caution flag slowed the field. Pole sitter Bobby Hansen was the final victim for Aikey, surrendering the lead on the restart. Duane Coulson passed Hansen four laps later but was unable to chase down Aikey on the very fast racetrack before Terry Neal and Luke Merfeld moved up to challenge for the runner up spot following a lap eighteen caution. Neither driver had anything for the defending track champion during the final laps, with Aikey taking the win ahead of Neal, Merfeld, Coulson and Hansen. Russ Olson took home his third Modified feature win of the season by keeping his car planted on the cushion throughout the 20 lap event. The topside of the racetrack appeared to be the place to be early in the race, with only Ron Barker and Scott Nesteby using the shorter way around, both mired in the middle of the pack prior to a midrace caution flag. After racing resumed both drivers found the advantage they were looking for on bottom, with Barker catching the first two cars of Olson and points leader Ryan Dolan with three laps to go. The three cars ran nose-to-tail from that point on, with Olson just nosing out Dolan and Barker. Nesteby bested Jason Schueller for fourth at the checkers. Ty Kliener captured his Pro Stock feature win of the season by taking the lead away from Kevin Duerr on the fourth lap and cruising to the easy win. Jeff Tharp rebounded to second place after an early spin regulated him to the rear of the pack, just nipping Bo Richard and Jeff Kennedy at the checkers with Bobby Moyer taking home the fifth spot. Jerry Merkes topped the Hobby Stocks when a kamikaze charge by Mark Massey on the final corner scrambled the finishing order behind him. For the third straight week Massey dove underneath the leader on the final lap, spinning out each time. Larry Benn, Kory Haverly, Duane Ahmann and Jeff Reinert were able to avoid Massey’s spinning racecar to round out the top five. BJ Schmitt avoided a first lap wreck in Fun Car action to take the win ahead of Chad Hallahan and Chris Hinrichs. Driver and fans will get their first look at a revamped Farley Speedway on Friday July 20th as work began immediately after the races to put down over 1000 cubic yards of clay on the racing surface. Cars will first test the new surface during the 7 pm hotlaps with racing to follow. For more information contact Simmons Promotions at 563-744-3620 or online at www.simmonspromotionsinc.com.
