WEAVER POCKETS PECATONICA CASHWinnebago Co
Fairgrounds Kevin Weaver pocketed $10,000 for his efforts at the Winnebago Co Fairgrounds in Pecatonica IL on Monday July 2nd, capturing the 40-lap UMP Summernationals Late Model feature event. Starting the race on the outside front row, the Flatland Flash fell in behind pole sitter Don O’Neal through a series of early cautions, the first of which saw UMP Summernationals points leader Billy Moyer make contact with the turn four wall. Moyer pitted for repairs, returning to action in 23rd spot only after a mishap on the ensuing restart required a stoppage of the race to separate two machines. Weaver took the lead following an additional restart on the second lap, securing his position at the top when Bill Frye’s evening ended in the turn three wall. Brian Birkhofer shadowed Weaver during the opening laps, while Steve Boley advanced up to third from his sixth place start. Boley used the next caution on lap 26 to swap positions with Birkhofer, closing in on the leader by running a half of a car width lower on the racetrack. Using the next eleven laps to setup an opportunity to pass, Boley made his move on lap 37, diving underneath Weaver for the lead just as the red flag was waving for an injured spectator in the infield. With the pass negated, Boley lined up for the double file restart in the second position, with Birkhofer alongside. Finding some moisture in the cushion, Birkhofer rocketed ahead of both Boley and Weaver on the restart, leading the pair off of the second corner but falling back in line after the same piece of real estate in turn 3 failed to provide similar traction. Boley was able to mount only a last corner challenge, pulling underneath but unable to hold the lead as the cars crossed the checkers. Birkhofer had his excellent third place showing nullified when his car failed to make post-race weight, handing third to Darren Miller ahead of Don O’Neal. Moyer used the caution flags and double file restarts to claw his way back into fifth at the checkers, ahead of Dennis Erb Jr and Shannon Babb. Ryan Dolan and Gary Webb rounded out the top ten after spending the final stages battling each other while negotiating slower traffic. The next event on the huge half mile will be the UDTRA Pro Dirt Cars, running for $10,000 to win on Wednesday August 8th. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:15 with time trials and racing to follow.
