Guss Jr. Scores W. Liberty Bud Shootout Victory
The second night of Simmons Promotions Memorial Weekend Bud Shootout 4 day swing took place at the West Liberty Raceway on Saturday, May 25th. An outstanding field of 52 Late Model drivers signed in to do battle for the $6,000 top prize.
5 heat races and 2 consolations plus the Hollywood Graphics fast dash were all run prior to the 50 lap Bud Shootout feature taking to the track. The fast dash was a real crowd pleaser, Darren Miller held off several challenges by Ray Guss Jr. to win the six lap dash earning the pole position start for the feature. Miller held the top spot in the main event for five laps before Guss Jr. was able to move into the lead. Guss went on to provide the fans with a dominating performance. Lapped traffic came into play early but Guss was masterful in working traffic in route to the win. The race was slowed on the 27th circuit for the stalled car of Rusty Zook, on the restart Denny Eckrich tried to challenge Guss for the lead but Guss was too strong and went on to pull away for a comfortable win. The 50 lap feature was run off very quickly with only the one minor caution. Denny Eckrich advanced from his 7th position start to take second over Gary Webb, who had started in the 11th position. Rob Toland took the checkers in fourth ahead of Miller. The second Late Model consolation was red flagged for a serious rollover incident involving Chris Spieker. The car was seriously damaged and Spieker was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital for a checkup, Spieker was believed to be just bruised and shaken up.
The 10 lap non-qualifiers feature was won by Mark Burgtorf taking the checkers ahead of Clint Hines.
The Miller Time Modified feature turned out to be a family affair, the Brick brothers finished one and two. The elder of the two, Darrell, took a hard fought win over Gerry. Both drivers are Firemen in Iowa City and the modified feature was a hot race on Saturday night. Darrell advanced quickly from his sixth row start and led the majority of the 20 lap race. Gerry challenged Darrell the last ten laps getting alongside on numerous occasions but Darrell was up to the challenge in taking the win. Scott Megonigle took the checkers in third.
Matt Bodman broke Chad Simpson’s win streak in the Dadco Corp/Parker Stores Pro Stock division on Saturday night. Bodman scored a hard fought win over defending Pro Stock Champion Andy Eckrich. Chris Simpson crossed the line in third.
Matt Fulton took the NASCAR Hobby Stock feature win by a couple of feet over Davey Elliott. Fulton led the feature event flag to flag but was challenged the entire distance by Elliott. Todd Hansen advanced from deep in the field to take third.
NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action presented by Dodge will return to the West Liberty Raceway on Saturday, June 1st with race time set for 7 p.m.
