Steve Johnson & Jon Rogers Score NASCAR Late Model Twin Feature Wins At Dubuque Speedway
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge was in action on Sunday night at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway with a bonus night of racing. The fans were treated to a full program of racing plus twin features in the NASCAR Late Model division.
The first Late Model feature saw Steve Johnson pick up his second feature win of the season. Johnson started in the sixth row and worked to the front to be a part of a pack of drivers racing for the lead. Johnson was able to get by Luke Merfeld for the lead late in the main and hold off Merfeld for the win by a car length. Jon Rogers took third in the first feature ahead of Darren Mish.
The second feature saw the groove move around on the slick track. Gary Webb was leading using the low groove but several drivers were working the middle of the track and that line was getting quicker as the race went on. Jon Rogers used the center line in taking the lead from Webb on lap 13. Then the rain drops began to fall making for treacherous conditions. The already slick track was made unsafe and the race was called on lap 17. Rogers scored his second win of the year in taking the win over Webb and Steve Ihm.
Jason Schueller used the low line of the slick track to score another feature win in the Modified feature event. Schueller drove a flawless race in taking the 20 lap feature win over Ron Barker and Scott Nesteby. The win extended Schueller’s point lead in the Modified division.
Bobby Moyer ran a perfect race in taking the 15 lap Pro Stock feature win. Moyer was able to work his car on the low line and out raced Jeff Reinert and Ty Kleiner to the checkers.
Jed Freiberger scored his first ever feature win in the NASCAR Hobby Stock feature event. Freiberger led the entire 10 laps in route to the impressive win. Freiberger was not rattled by the strong challenges of Brian Alt and Larry Benn, who finished second and third respectively.
Brian Kelly celebrated his recent marriage and honeymoon by scoring his first Farley Flyer feature win. Kelly scored the win in only his second night of racing at Dubuque.
Keith Kiernan ran second ahead of Jason Roth.
Racing will continue on Hoosier Tire and Union night at Dubuque on Sunday, August 24th. All Union card holders will receive $2 off grandstand admissions; race time will be 6:30 p.m.
