Ihm Scores Dubuque Speedway NASCAR Late Model Win
NASCAR Weekly racing Series action resumed at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday night following another week off due to rain. The Dubuque track has been plagued by inclement weather this season, but Sunday, June 9th was a perfect day for racing. East Dubuque Savings Bank and Drew Cook and Sons Excavating sponsored the nights NASCAR racing action.
Steve (Ace) Ihm took the lead at the onset of the 25 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature. Ihm was able to work the short way around the high banked 3/8 mile dirt track, and hold off several challenges by Jeff AIkey. Ihm drove a perfect race in not allowing Aikey to sneak on the inside and make a serious challenge for the lead. Ihm took the checkers with a ten car length lead over Aikey. Gary Webb advanced from a sixth row start to take third ahead of Mark Curwen.
Ryan Dolan, defending Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway track champion, won his first feature event of the 2002 season on Sunday night in the Modified division. The slick track conditions made for a caution plagued feature event. Dolan was able to hold off all challengers in winning the 20 lap feature. Jason Schueller came on strong late in taking second ahead of Rich Smith.
Ty Kleiner scored his second feature win of the weekend at SPI tracks by topping the Pro Stock main event. Kleiner won on Friday night at the Farley Speedway and doubled up with his Sunday night win. Kleiner finished ahead of a strong running Jeff Tharp at the checkers. Jim Brokus took the third at the stripe ahead of Dan Shelliam.
Larry Benn drove his Monte Carlo Hobby Stock to his fifth feature win on Sunday night topping a strong field in the 10 lap feature. Benn started in tenth and was able to steadily work to the front taking the lead at the midway point of the race. Benn took the lead from Ed McIntyre, who held on to take second ahead of Mike Hughes.
Jeff Jorgensen drove his Dodge Neon to his first win of the season in the growing Farley Flyer division. Jorgensen led the race flag to flag in taking the checkers ahead of Brian Kammerude and Randy Madigan.
Sunday, June 16th the Dubuque County Speedway will host Choo Choo Charlies Kids Night. The first 250 kids through the gates will receive special prizes plus Choo Choo Charlie will be on hand available for pictures with the kids. Race time will be 6:30 p.m.
