Aikey & Ihm Score Late Model Wins on Craftsman Night At Dubuque Speedway
The Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway hosted Craftsman Tools Night a the races on Sunday, June 30th. The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge featured twin 25 lap features for the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Models.
The first feature saw Jeff Aikey score his second feature win in a row on the high banked 3/8 mile dirt track. Aikey was able to hold off the persistent challenges from 2 time defending track champion Gary Webb in scoring the win. Denny Eckrich turned in another strong performance in taking third in the opening feature of the night. The second 25 lap feature belonged to Steve (Ace) Ihm. Ace put his Hawkeye Boat Sales #11 on the top side of the track and led the race flag to flag. Darren Mish ran a very smooth race in taking second to Ihm, Jeff Aikey came from his 12th starting position to take third in the second feature.
The NASCAR Modified feature provided the fans with a very spirited battle for the lead for the entire 20 laps. Bob Dominacki put his Stealth Race cars #5D on the top side of the track early and set sail. Ron Barker shot to the front from his 12th position start and was able to take over the second position on the third lap. The final 17 laps saw Barker work high and low to try and overtake Dominacki. Barker was unable to get by the very smooth Dominacki and settled for second. Jason Schueller was within striking distance the entire race and settled for third.
The Pro Stock feature was a battle of Jeff’s on Sunday night. Jeff Valentine led the first half of the race before Jeff Tharp was able to take over the lead in route to another feature win. Valentine crossed under the checkers in second ahead of Bobby Moyer.
The NASCAR Hobby Stock feature was won by Jim Turpin making the second time in 2002 that Turpin has visited the Dubuque Speedway victory lane. Turpin shot low on the start and took the lead from his second row start before one lap was completed. Turpin went on to lead all laps of the main event. Mike Hughes took second ahead of Larry Benn.
Brian Kammerude drove his Cavalier to the Farley Flyer feature win on Sunday night taking his third feature win of the season. Kammerude scored the win over last weeks feature winner Randy Leehan.
The Dubuque Speedway will host the last leg of the 4 day Budweiser Open Late Model Shootouts on Sunday, July 7th. Bud Late Models will run a 50 lap feature with $6,000 going to the winner. All classes will be in action with a 6:30 p.m. start time.
