Merfeld & Eckrich Score Wins On Legends Night At Farley SpeedwayThe Farley Speedway hosted the 2nd annual Legends Night featuring the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge. The night was a recognition of drivers who raced on Iowa dirt tracks during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Over 50 drivers attended the special night and were introduced to the fans by promoter Keith Simmons. The nights on track action was sponsored by AEM Engines and Red’s Limo service both of Waterloo.
The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Models ran two 25 laps features on Friday night. The first feature saw Luke Merfeld take off from his front row start and never look back. Merfeld led the entire race in route to his first win of the 2002 season on the Farley high banks. Denny Eckrich increased his point lead by coming from deep in the pack to take second. Jeff Aikey took the checkers in third ahead of Josh McGowan. The final race of the night was the second 25 lap main event. Denny Eckrich advanced from his 11th position start to score the win. Eckrich was pressured late in the race by Aikey but was able to earn the win completing a very good night with a 2nd and a win on the night. Josh Mcgowan took third in the second feature ahead of Luke Merfeld.
The Quarter Master Modifieds feature saw Ron Barker work his way to the front and appear to be on his way to another win. The drive shaft on his mount broke on lap fifteen turning the lead over to Larry Herring. The final five laps proved to be a furious battle between Herring and Russ Olson. The two drivers swapped the lead several times before Herring was able to secure the top spot. Herring took a two car length win over Olson with Scott Nesteby taking third.
Ty Kleiner recovered from a first lap skirmish to score his fourth win of the 2002 season in the NASCAR Pro Stock feature. Kleiner chased down race leader Bobby Moyer and was able to take the lead on lap 9 of the 15 lap feature. Moyer took second ahead of Jeff Reinert.
Steve Dunkel won his first feature of the season in the very strong NASCAR hobby Stock division. Dunkel was able to hold off a very determined Jerry Merkes in scoring a ½ a car length win. Jason Rauen crossed the stripe in third ahead of Jim Turpin.
14 year old Levi Benn won his first Farley Flyer win of the year at Farley on Friday night. The win was Benn’s second of the season to go along with a Dubuque Speedway win. Jason Roth took second ahead of Jim Thompson.
In addition to all five classes of cars the Farley Speedway hosted the Vintage Coupes and the Nostalgic Car Club in honor of Legends Night. Terry Mattly won the coupe feature over Larry Driskel and Terry Roster won the nostalgic race over Bill Barthelmes.
The Farley Speedway will host round number 2 of the Budweiser Open Late Model Shootouts on Friday, July 5th. A 50 lap Late Model feature will award the winner a cool $6,000. The four day Holiday swing opens at the Davenport Speedway on July 4th and will include a Saturday stop in West Liberty and a Sunday stop at the Dubuque Speedway in addition to the Friday date at the Farley Speedway.
