Webb Back In Dubuque Speedway Victory Lane
Dubuque, Iowa: The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series was back in action on the high banked 3/8 mile clay track Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday night.
When the final checkered flag of the night waved it was the veteran 4 time defending NASCAR Late Model track champion Gary Webb holding the flag. Webb earned a very hard fought win on Sunday night only leading the last 100 feet of the feature. Mark Merfeld led the first 24 and ¾ laps before drifting just a touch high in turn four on the final lap. The small opening was all that Webb needed, Webb beat Merfeld to the line by ½ a car length. The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation 25 lap feature win was Webb’s first at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway in 2003. Dan Shelliam turned in another fine run taking third ahead of Ace Ihm.
Ron Barker added yet another feature win taking the checkers first in the NASCAR Modified main event. Barker was able to work both grooves of the track in making his way to the front from his sixth row start. Barker took the lead on lap number 9 and went on to record the win over Jason Schueller and Mark Schulte.
The NSCAR Pro Stock feature was decided at the scales on Sunday night. Apparent winner Gary Crawford failed to make weight giving the victory to Ty Kleiner. After a couple of early incidents Kleiner was able to work to the front putting himself in position to contend for the win. Jeff Kennedy took second ahead of Bobby Moyer.
The Mark Massey win streak was halted on Sunday night in the B-Modified division. Massey had won 13 consecutive features at the SPI tracks in 2003 but Sunday night veteran driver Bruce VanGordon put an end to Massey’s winning streak. Van Gordon took the lead late in the race and Massey set up one last charge for the win but went into turn three too hard and spun on the final lap. Jacob Seegmiller took second ahead of David Brunskill.
It is only fitting that an Ansel should win a race every year at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway. K.C. Ansel piloted his Hobby Stock to the win on Sunday night and dedicated the win to his uncle Denny who passed away recently. Ansel drove a very smooth race on the slick track taking the win over Jason Rauen and Jim Turpin.
24 Farley Flyers took the green flag for the feature on Sunday night and went on to run a caution free 10 lap main event. Rich Hammer took the lead on the white flag lap and went on to record the win over Troy Bauer. Randy Leehan took third ahead of Steve Stackis.
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action will continue on Sunday, June 29th with hot laps at 6 p.m. and racing to follow at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway.
