Cannon Scores First Win Of Season
At Muscatine County Fair; Dolan, Chad Simpson & Darren Voss Also Score NASCAR
Wins
The Muscatine County Fair got
underway on Wednesday, July 17th with the featured attraction being
the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series program presented by Dodge. A large crowd took
in a very quick night of action packed stock car racing with the final checkered
flag of the night waving at 9:50 p.m. at the West Liberty Raceway.
The headliner of the night was the
25 lap Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation NASCAR Late Model feature. Tom Cannon
shot to the front from his second row start and quickly established himself as
the man to beat. Cannon was challenged early in the race by Ray Guss Jr. Guss
was able to close on Cannon but was not able to overtake the quick running #32
of Cannon. Matt Furman caught the leaders late in the race and was able to get
by Guss for second but ran out of time and settled for second to Cannon. At the
checkers Cannon took the win by ½ a car length over Furman with Guss running a
close third ahead of Todd Davis and Bobby Sexton. The win was Cannon’s first of
the 2002 season.
Ryan Dolan has had a very
frustrating season behind the wheel of the #16 NASCAR Modified. Wednesday night
Dolan rode the high line of the tacky track to his first win of the season at
the West Liberty Raceway. Dolan took the win in the 25 lap feature by out racing
a very determined Gerry Brick. Dan Chapman enjoyed one of his best finishes of
the season in taking third ahead of Rick Hixson.
Last Saturday night Chad Simpson
needed the assistance of a wrecker to load his Pro Stock, Wednesday night
Simpson wheeled his car into victory lane. Simpson scored the 15 lap Pro Stock
feature win by beating Andy Eckrich to the checkers. Simpson worked to the front
from his eighth position start in scoring an impressive feature win. Eckrich
took second ahead of Matt Bodman.
Daren Voss scored his third win of
the 2002 season in the NASCAR Hobby Stock division. Voss took the lead near the
midway point of the race and went on to score the win over Stan O’Brien and
Jeremie Thompson.
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series
will return to Saturday night racing at the West Liberty Raceway on Saturday,
July 27th. All four classes will be in action with race time set for
7 p.m.
