Ohrt Scores Second Late Model Win In
A Row At West Liberty; Stoolman & Voss Score First Ever Wins
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series
presented by Dodge was back in action on Saturday night June 29th on
a very warm and muggy night at the West Liberty Raceway. The night’s action was
sponsored by L.L. Pelling, The Corner Tap and TNT Graphics.
Monte Ohrt has contemplated retiring
from racing this year but with the recent developments his racing has received a
new boost. Ohrt has teamed up with car owner Tom Cannon for the 2002 season, the
season started slow but has really come on strong the last couple of weeks. Ohrt
captured the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation feature win on Saturday making back
to back wins at his home track. Ohrt caught race leader Dave Eckrich with 15
laps of the 25 laps completed. Ohrt was able to make the pass using the top side
of the very smooth and wide fast track. Ohrt went on to take a five car length
win over Dave Eckrich. Jeff Bair came on very strong late in the race to nip Tom
"The Dog" Christensen for third.
The Miller Time Modifieds provided
the fans with a very entertaining 20 lap feature. Groups of five or six cars
were racing in packs all through the entire field making for some thrilling
racing action. The lead was swapped several times before Todd Stoolman was able
to emerge from the lead pack late in the race. Stoolman scored his first ever
Modified win at the West Liberty Raceway, Stoolman has won at West Liberty
before but his last win was in a Pro Stock several years ago. Stoolman took the
hard fought win over Jim Vest with Robbie Verbeck taking third.
Another driver who has been having a
rough season turned his fortunes around on Saturday night. The Dadco Corp/Parker
Stores Pro Stock win went to John Maher. Maher led the feature race flag to
flag, taking his first win of the 2002 season. Maher scored the win over Rusty
Daufeldt. Dan Lange turned in a very strong run taking third ahead of Andy
Eckrich.
The Hobby Stock ten lap feature was
won by another first visitor to victory lane. Derrin Voss put his number #42
into the winners circle after holding off a fast closing Todd Hansen. Voss was
the third driver to lead the feature race on Saturday night. Stan O’Brien took
third ahead of defending Hobby Stock track champion Jeremie Thompson.
Saturday, July 6th the West Liberty
Raceway will hold the third race of four in the Budweiser Open Late Model Swing
celebrating the 4th of July holiday. The Bud Late Models will run a
50 lap feature which will award $6,000 to the winner. All classes will be in
competition on Saturday night with the support classes racing for track points.
Action will get underway with hot laps at 6:30 with racing to follow at 7 p.m.
