Denny Eckrich Scores $6,000 Payday At Bud Open Shootout Dubuque Speedway 5/25/03
Dubuque, Iowa: A great crowd was on hand Sunday, May 25th as the Dubuque Speedway presented the “Bud Open Late Model Shootout” sponsored by Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation, Hollywood Graphics and Hoosier Racing Tire.
26 Bud Late Models took to the high banked 3/8 mile track for the 50 lap feature with Hollywood Graphics dash winner Billy Tuckwell setting the pace. Tuckwell was joined on the front row by his teammate for the night Ray Guss Jr. Guss parked his familiar #12 to race the #75 backup car of Tuckwell’s. The two 75’s were not able to hold off the “Flyin 50” of Denny Eckrich as Eckrich was able to get out early and set the pace. Eckrich held the point position for the first 19 laps while several cars were making there way to the front from deep in the filed. Dennis Erb took the lead on lap 20 after starting the main in the 17th position. Erb went on to lead the race for the next 22 laps until Eckrich was able to regain the top spot. While the fierce battle was going on for the lead, 3 and four wide racing was going on as several positions were being swapped. A great battle was being held for the 3rd position as Dave Eckrich, Steve Boley and Darrel DeFrance battled wheel to wheel.
A late race caution on lap 45 set up a five lap dash to the finish. Eckrich held his line perfectly and took the win over Erb. Dave Eckrich brought home the 58 in third taking the checkers ahead of DeFrance who took the initial green in 22nd. Steve Boley rounded out the top five. In addition to the Bud Late Models, all support classes were action running under a draw and redraw format. Smith took the lead on lap 4 and went to lead the remainder of the 20 lap feature holding off Ron Barker for the win. Steve Wetter crossed the stripe in third ahead of Jason Schueller.
