Webb Doubles Up At Dubuque Speedway
Dubuque, Iowa: Following a rain out on Sunday, August 3rd the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series returned to the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway on August 10th. The Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Models ran twin 25 lap features to makeup for the rainouts.
The night belonged to veteran NASCAR Late Model pilot Gary Webb. The first 25 lap feature saw Matt Mish set the pace for the first 9 laps before Mark Merfeld was able to move out front. Merfeld was overtaken by Webb on lap number 13 and Webb went on to lead the remainder of the race taking the win over current point leader Jeff Aikey. The drive of the night was turned in by Rollie Frink, who was scheduled to start from the pole. Frink had troubles getting the car to the track and was relegated to the tail of the field. Frink battled his way through the pack to take third at the checkers in the first 25 lap feature. Darren Mish and Josh McGowan rounded out the top five. The second 25 lap feature saw several lead changes as well. Bobby Hansen led the first two laps before Dan Shelliam took over the point. Darren Mish took over the lead on lap number 6 and went on to hold the lead until lap number 19 when Shelliam moved back into the lead. Webb passed Shelliam on lap number 23 and held off Shelliam for the win. Darren Mish took third ahead of Mark Merfeld and Jeff Aikey.
The NASCAR Modified feature saw Ron Barker take advantage of several early race mishaps to move all the way from his 16th position start to the lead on lap number 5. Barker went on to record another feature win at his hometown track, The Dubuque Speedway. Rich Smith rode the top side to a second place finish over Mark Schulte, Scott Nesteby and Mel Saffran.
Bobby Moyer was able to get out front early and lead the 15 lap Pro Stock feature for 14 circuits in taking the win over Ty Kleiner and Gary Crawford. Jeff Valentine and Dane Steiner rounded out the top five.
Tim Current made his second visit of the 2003 season to victory lane on Sunday night, topping the B-Modified feature. Current held off Mark Massey in the closing laps to score the feature win. Ted Engler ran third ahead of Jake Murphy and Jay Garvey.
Steve Dunkel was in the right place at the right time on Sunday night and came away the feature winner in the NASCAR Hobby Stock division. The leaders got together causing a caution on lap number 8, on the restart Dunkel took the lead and went on to take the checkers ahead of Jarvis Eastlick and B.J. Schmitt.
Brian Kammerude put his Ford Escort out front on lap number 3 and went on to score the ten lap feature win in the Farley Flyer division. Joe Zrostlik drove to a second place finish ahead of Brad Klaas.
The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series will be back in action on Sunday, August 17th with hot laps at 6 p.m. at the Dubuque Speedway.
